I didn’t know I’d had a stroke. i was on a walk with my husband and felt unwell. I rang 111 and a doctor came. He didn’t diagnose it either. We drove to hospital for a blood test the doctor said I needed and after a very long wait I was admitted. I went to the stroke ward at 4.00am. I was sent home the next day. I had a TIA a week later but again didn’t stay in.
Stroke can be marked by a big increase in blood pressure. Get yours assessed at the pharmacist.
Medication,if necessary can bring down B.P. and stop stroke before it occurs.
There is no certainty about this, unfortunately.
I too didn’t know I had had a stroke. In fact it was 4 days before I sought medical attention and that was a telephone appointment with a GP. Despite not having classic stroke symptoms thankfully the dr recognised it was probabky a stroke & he sent me straight to A&E where it was diagnosed & I was admitted to hospital. There are so many different ways a stroke can present it is not always easy to recognise.
Hello again Mrs5K. I agree. How long were you in hospital and have you got disabilities from it?
I had 2 stays in hospital. Both a week long and the and one was a week after i had been sent home the 1st time.
I still have a useless left leg and some double vision along with fatigue but I am able to get by ok. I have come a long way since my stroke..
Gosh. It’s amazing that you didn’t know it wasn’t a stroke. I didn’t know they were so difficult to diagnose. I didn’t stay long at all. I got along for years fine holding my husband hand but now we are trying this walker life is more complicated As far as this site is concerned I can use it fine if I have a message but it is bewildering otherwise. I have to use a different email to receive messaged. best wishes Jenny-Wrenn.
It seems to me, diagnosing stroke is a bit of a lottery.
I am not convinced there is a definitive way to diagnose strokes and nor am I convinced there is a definitive way to prevent recurrence.
This is a branch of modern medicine that is lagging way behind other branches of modern medicines.
I have not yet researched complimentary medicines wrt stroke, but I suspect that too might not be that much better.
So it’s a question of “Do you feel lucky?”
I go on a zoom stroke voices group for the East of England. If you aren’t on one yourself I could mention your comments.
Not sure if you are responding to my comments, but if you are I have no problem with you mentioning my comments. It is what I believe and I am happy to go on record with my views.
I don’t go on zoom stroke voices group, but if I were to, then I would certainly be happy to speak my mind.
Take care.

You were saying diagnosing stroke is a bit of a lottery.
How are you today? I only know how to reply to people who post me so I hope you get this. I had one reply saying that diagnosing stroke was a lottery. What symptoms did you have? how do you get around if you have a useless left leg? Best wishes Jenny-Wren
I’m doing ok thank you. Hope you’re doing ok too.
Stroke diagnosis can be a bit of a lottery at times as there are so many different ways it can present. Mine started with dizziness & nausea and some vision issues. It was a few days before I lost use if my left side, which is why I didn’t go to the drs straight away.
I am able to drag my left leg around when I “walk” but I can’t go far and am very slow. I use a mobility scooter for longer distances.
How are you getting on?
Ann
My niece suggested a mobility scooter. At the moment i either use my walker or my husband drives us nearer where we want to go and I use the walker from there. We just go about t
I would recommend a mobility scooter. It has made a big difference to me and others on the forum. Here are a couple of posts relating to people’s experiences.
Best wishes
Ann
Yes I’ve got one now last march, made areal difference to my inclusion in the walking world only ran out of juice once so know mummy limits
I have made a move in that direction. I looked up Motability and rang the nearest supplier and my husband is comparing costs between leasing or buying. Motability seem to look after every thing for you. Did you lease or buy?
Probably more cost effective to buy but try before you do.
If you can afford it is money well spent.
Check out things like size, you probably want to take it somewhere by car.
Range, how far will it take you on a charge and how long does a recharge take.
Ask others. Maybe second hand or reconditioned though I’ve no experience of that.
Here’s a thread I posted with some relevant info:
May your exploration of the world be full of great experiences.

I have bought mine. More cost effective for me that way but you need to weigh up all the costs including maintenance, insurance etc.
@Bobbi has given some great tips of things to think about & definitely try before you buy.
Happy adventuring.

I was wondering about pavements. The reason why I am thinking of it is that it takes me ages to get anywhere with my walker. The ground is very rough.
I mean the kerb. I have to lift the walker up and down to navigate unfriendly road sides
