I am posting this as I am interested to learn if this is something (physiatry) is available in the UK.
I came across it in the book “Stronger after Stroke - Your roadmap to recovery” by Peter G Levine and wondered why I have never heard about it in all the time I have been a carer for a stroke survivor.
I guess I should not be surprised there is only one or possibly two (unless my search technique is flawed) post(s) on this forum dating back two years (May 2023).
Why is that?
Surely if the physiatrist is a specialist stroke doctor, there should be lots of them and the vast majority of stroke survivors should have seen one?
The articles I found seem to be posted by non-UK members.
Physiatry (also known as rehab medicine) is big overseas, but in the UK it’s more like a hidden gem. But I agree, it feels like the system is playing hide-and-seek with us.
It could still just be that they are either under a different name/umbrella within the NHS.
Maybe Physiatry is a revamp and mergence of departments within Neurology and has yet reached everywhere or all that specialise in neuro.
I know one the Physiatrists in the link @Trace57 provided works for the Greater Manchester NHS Trust, Salford Royal, but there’s no mention of her name being linked to Physiatry. So could it be that it’s now under Neurorehabilitation
