Re- my other posts, my wife had a slight stroke, about a month ago, she is doing rather well, and is now being prescribed Clopidogrel, which she has been on for about seven days now…today she has been violently sick several times, just wondering if the tablets can cause this ?..
I would ask your pharmacist. The are usually more knowledgeable than doctors about side effects. Also, the more people report possible side effects the better the information for future patients
Thank you, she has had Diarrhea as well as being sick, there is a bug going round here so maybe that’s what is causing it…as someone pointed out, her immune system will be obviously be weakened by the stroke…she is a little better this morning, and hopefully will start eating again…
Well, Martha has gone from eating like a horse, since her stroke, to now not eating at all…just wondering if it’s this bug thing, or is this common after a stroke ?..any thoughts welcomed…
If she has a bug of any description that will likely affect her appetite. Especially a sickness bug. You could speak to a GP or just wait out a few days if you think it is the bug that’s going atound & fhen see how she is.
Not everything willbe stroke related. We are still susceptible to getting other things after a stroke.
Hope she feels better soon.
Thank you, she was due to go for a blood test today, but we had to cancel…she is now going next week, so will have a word with the nurse then…she is a little improved today, but still got no appetite…fingers crossed it returns shortly…
Good to hear she is improving. It’s important she stays hydrated even if she can only manage a few sips here & there. She’ll probably get her appetite back when she feels better.
Thanks for that…she is drinking plenty…tea, water, lemonade, and is thirsty all of the time…
Maybe she should see her doctor just to be on the safe side. The fact that she has been eating a lot post stroke, and now drink a lot, maybe it’s just as well she’s having this blood test. It’ll certainly rule in/out such things as diabetes. Will she be taking a urine sample too?

I did not do well on Clopidogrel, it gave me a horrible taste in my mouth and I had diarrhoea for a whole week. I did some research on it and found that they use castor oil to bind the ingredients in the tablet, my GP changed my medication and I had no more stomach issues. Hope your wife feels better soon.
Hello @Miffy257 - Welcome to the community and congratulations on listening to your body, doing your research and going back to your GP to get the medication changed.
This approach will serve you well now and in the future. I wish more people did that
Wishing you all the best.

Then with the urine sample too, they most likely will be checking for diabetes to, among other things. It could possibly be type 2 diabetes, and I’m only speaking from my own experience, I’m not an expert. But it would explain her increased appetite and thirst, and could very well explain the reason for her mild stroke. There is a higher risk of strokes with uncontrolled diabetes. If it is that, it can be controlled with medication and adjustment to her diet . . . yes, more pills
But on the bright side, getting diabetes under control can improve her general wellbeing all over and that’s always a good thing

Thanks for that, Yes I’m type 2 Diabetic…She is much better today, thankfully, and her appetite is slowly coming back…plus she hasn’t been sick for a couple of days now…
Good to hear she is on the mend now & that her appetite is returning.

‘Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet agent. It has a wide variety of side effects, the most common being bleeding, diarrhea, rash, indigestion, nausea, and vomiting’ - PUBMED.
My brother was prescribed clopidogrel but can also cause brain bleeds and breathing issues.
My brother has lung and breathing issues from pneumonia so we decided against Clopidogrel even though the consultant keep pushing it!
In the end the consultant conceded that difference between the effectiveness of Clopidgorel and 75mg of Asprin was just one percent!
We kept insisting to the Stroke consultant that we really didn’t think in my brother’s case with his breathing issues that Clopidogrel was a good idea for him and for the stroke consultant to speak with my brother’s respiratory consultant who he has been seeing for 2 and half year and works in the very same hospital but he just ignored what we we saying.
We have a meeting with this consultant in June regarding our complaint that my brother was given no follow up appointments even though he has serious loss of vision and is not a well man.
One of the main issues with aspirin is the high risk of duodenum and stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. That’s why they started discouraging the use of aspirin for things like headaches and started introducing paracetamol back in the 70s/80s.
