My husband has AF which caused a stroke in 2022. He was very lucky and has just been left with no sight in left eye.
However trying to get reasonable travel insurance for him anyone have any contacts for travel insurance?
I don’t think it’s the stroke that’s causing the increase in premiums it’s when I go through the health screening they seem to tie up the AF with it, he is on a waiting list for a heart ablation for the AF just wondered if anyone in the same boat re travel insurance.?
@Chris0435 Welcome, I am stroke survivor. I have not had to purchase travel insurance yet, but I am sure there will be others on the forum who have and will be able to help. Good luck I wish you both well
Hello @Chris0435 - Hello and welcome to the community..
My thoughts in insurance (not just travel) is that it is an evil necessity. You have to be really careful when taking out insurance to make sure it covers your needs.
In my view, this is not quite like shopping for clothes or food where you can get “better prices or value for money”.
It has happened to me once when I was involved in a no fault of my own car accident. The third party’s insurer did not want to pay and my insurer did not want to pay either. I had a witness who wen contacted either did not respond or was unable to support my claim. Either way, I lost out. At the time I was covered but did not have “legal cover” and so was unable to follow up or challenge which left me out of pocket and a damaged car that I had to repair at my own (additional) cost since the insurance wasn’t worth the paper it was written on.
Back to you - health insurance can be tricky and I have to say you need to think seriously about this. If you bother to take out insurance (I don’t believe it is a legal requirement) then you must make sure it will cover your needs.
Having a policy with holes in it or small print that you haven’t read could leave you and/or your loved one stranded where you don’t want to be. Perhaps, this is one of those occasions when you really must buy the best you can afford, but then if you can’t afford it maybe you shouldn’t even think about buying it.
Just my own thoughts - not advice but something you might want to think about.
Nice to meet you. All the best to you and your husband and I hope you have a wonderful holiday.
@Chris0435 hi & welcome to the community. Sorry to hear of your husbands stroke.
I have just purchased travel insurance myself. I have used Tesco but you can also try somewhere like medical travel compared, all clear, stay sure, saga. One of the standard questions re stroke is about AF and it is a known cause of a stroke so whilst it hasn’t been fixed the insurers will consider it a higher risk.
You may find it difficult though as your husband is waiting for surgery which insurers don’t tend to like. My advice would be to ring a company up and talk through your needs. If his AF is being controlled by meds they may be happy to insure at a lower cost.
Hi Chris, Sorry to hear of your husbands problems and getting travel insurance. Only yesterday I enquired about our travel insurance as we want to take our motorhome to France. I was told France was a low risk area for us to travel to, but Spain and Greece were high risk countries. I am assuming that’s in case I need to be brought home for any reason. I went with Staysure Travel insurance, but was asked many health related questions and one that I was asked was do I have AF and was my stroke related to it. Thankfully for me I do not have AF, but it clearly is a question they kept asking for clarification. So it seems that could be something that pushes your insurance up considerably. However, if it means we can still enjoy life and make the best of the situation then its worth the premium due providing it is a reasonable and affordable cost. I hope you and your husband manage to get something sorted, and you are able to get away. I wish you both well and I’m sure you’ll find everyone is so friendly and helpful on this site. I know I did when I joined a few months back. Good luck with the insurance.
Many thanks for your response I hope you enjoy your trip to France.
Yes finding the AF appears to be what is causing the higher premiums also the fact he is waiting on a heart ablation for the AF.
I have tried a few and for 6 days cover for the USA it started off at £1,300!! I have managed now to get this down to £700 but still high for only 6 day cover.
I will keep trying and let everyone know what we eventually get it for.
Good luck with it Chris. My eldest son and family live in Canada, and when I first enquired about travelling to Canada a few months after my stroke I was quoted over £2000 for me. We haven’t been yet ! Unfortunately, insurance is something we need to take out, and the insurance companies know it ! I hope you get the break you both need and enjoy every moment .
That’s a really high premium I’m sorry to hear you have not managed yet to visit your son. If I manage to get a good one I will post and you could maybe try for a quote.
I am not travelling with him it’s for the World Cup a guys trip!!
Hi @Chris0435 we have booked travel insurance on several occasions since my stroke 9 years ago and have always used a travel insurance comparison website. That way you can get the cover you require for a price you can afford.
I would say declare everything, otherwise it could cost you dearly if you need to claim for something you have not declared.
I hope this is helpful and you manage to find something suitable at a reasonable price.
Many thanks for your response I did try comparison websites but would not insure I believe it is his AF that is more the problem than the stroke and the fact he is waiting on an ablation for the AF.
I wish you well for your future will post when I get the best price
Welcome to the community, I’m sorry to hear about your husbands stroke and his AF.
We do have a partnership with AllClear that may be able to help. It may not be any cheaper but might be worth having a look at. We have some information on our website about them.

Hi, I haven,t posted for a while but I wonder if anyone can advise on the process of booking a holiday to Europe after stroke. Just to be a bit clearer, I had a mild stroke 21 months ago. The only real deficit I have is my right foot will not go down heel first when walking(if you know what I mean!) Anyway on holiday , can you book airport assistance easily enough or do you need a letter from your doctor? And is there anything else I should consider before booking. My husband would love to go back to Rome but I have been hesitant because of walking a long way in airports etc. Maybe I should just merrily wave him off to go on his own!!
My first piece of advice would be to make sure you declare everything when arranging travel insurance. We use a comparison website which means you can get the cover you require for a price you can afford.
You can book Special Assistance at the airport when you book your flights and you don’t need a letter from your GP. We have always found staff at the airports very helpful.
Booking an accessible room when you book your hotel is advisable, obviously depending on your needs.
I hope this is helpful, I’m sure others will soon be along to offer lots of advice and tips.
