Returning to driving

It looks like I’ve been granted a disability driving assessment after meeting the eye and recurring stroke criteria for DVLA

In four working days I have to book the assessment at my nearest centre.
The good news is my eyesight has recovered sufficiently for dvla to allow me the opportunity to get my license back.

Here goes nothing

Good news indeed Mrfrederickson. I remember driving being something I was concerned about, but recovered well enough not to need the full DVLA assessment process. I had a male physio at one point and he was very encouraging. On each session we would sit in my car, gradually building up until I was confident enough to start the car and drive safely round the car park. I’m sure he helped me a great deal because I was almost at the point of never driving again. For drivers it is very important to our recovery knowing that this part of our lives can be overcome safely. Good luck, best wishes Norma

That’s great Mark - wishing you all the best.
Knowing you, I am sure you’ll ace it

Great news, wishing you luck with your assessment!

Wishing you loads of luck Mark. I know how much driving again will mean to you. Maybe things are on an upward trajectory for you.

Best of luck.

I’m so pleased for you. I hope it all works out well.
I’m sure I’m not the only one keeping my fingers crossed for you.
I was nervous about the whole thing. Stroke knocks your confidence, doesn’t it?.
Obviously I’m glad I did the test and I hope you will soon be able to say the same.

Best wishes Mark.

Thanks Bobbi im cautious and not to confident about the outcome as you say the stroke has knocked me a bit so I must draw on my 40 years of driving experience to make it a better outcome.

It’s all still there. You just need to prove i to yourself, never mind the assessment.

They had me out driving around for an hour. Never mind the worry it was great to be back behind the wheel.

I’d let my car go to a dealer convinced I’d never drive again.

Post about your own experience. There will be others wanting to know more.

Whatever you write will be interesting.

Thanks Bobbi I will keep everyone updated on progress and will book the assessment next Tuesday as instructed by my letter as dvla write to the assessment centre as well as me so with my reference number I wil be expected I’m keen to have a few lessons with a disability driving instructor before the assessment to wake up my knowledge and remove any nerves

Apparently the centre will have a list of approved instructors in my area so here goes!!

Thanks mrs5k I hope you are right it certainly shows the doom merchants who said almost nobody can recover their eyesight after a stroke were wrong. I will post my adventures in due course. x

A friend of mine who has had his sight condemned for all time might be interested in your experience. I’ll point him at this thread.

You wish an actor ‘Break a leg’.

So for a driver maybe the equivalent is ‘Have a puncture’.

Looking forward to hearing good news.

Please do Bobbi, it was so wrong oh my neuro physio to condemn my eyesight to history, as I’ve proven, just never give up and use software on phone or tablet to strengthen the brain signals that are damaged
