Reapplying for licence

I had a stroke last August that resulted in almost total paralysis of my left side, in December whilst still in hospital, I completed the DVLA form to voluntarily surrender my licence, as although I was starting to walk, my left arm is not moving at all, on 10th January I got a letter on 10th January, saying they would contact my consultant and get back to me when there was progress, As I hasn’t heard anything I called yesterday, 14th April, and apparently my case has been passed to a DVLA doctor but no progress after that, does anyone have experience of how long this takes please,
I don’t have sight problems or communication issues, so I’m keen to get my independence back, so next will be buying an automatic car and having it adapted,

Hi. I informed DVLA after my stroke, but didn’t have to surrender my licence. I didn’t drive for about a year, but started to drive an adapted car after that (I still can’t use my right arm or leg to drive). It should be a straightforward procedure to get your licence back.

Apparently I haven’t technically surrendered mine as it has not been reviewed by a doctor, and from what I’ve read on here, this will not be a quick process

I am in the process of getting my husband’s licence back as we voluntarily surrendered it last year.
We had a letter last week saying it had been passed to dvla medical group.
So now the wait begins…

@caer_luel from reading & hearing other people’s experiences it can take months for them to get back to you. As with all things stroke you definitely need patience when dealing with DVLA.

Fingers crossed it doesn’t take too long & you are soon back on the road.

UPDATE********

So after surrendering my husband’s licence back in November 24 (unaware that the antidepressants where affecting his recovery so much) and then reapplying for his licence back in April 25, to then go to RDAC in September for his initial assessment to picking up our newly adapted car today!

It just goes to show what can be achieved with the right help/support and a lot of determination. This will be the best Christmas present that Lee has ever received.

Never give up!

Happy Christmas

That sounds like excellent advice Jeanne.

Well done you and Lee for persevering.
Wishing you many happy driving hours.

How difficult was it to have a car adapted ?

Actually, surprisingly easy.

Rdac gave us the name of companies close by that did the adaptations . Luckily for us there was a a company only a few miles away that could do the work.

They were extremely helpful, booked the car in and they needed the car for a full day. The whole process took just over 2 weeks from first enquiry.
