New quiz. Football players from the world A to Z . Starting with 1st name

Football players from the world. Past and present.

I will start this with Alan Ball

Alan James Ball (12 May 1945 – 25 April 2007) was an English professional football player and manager. He won the 1966 World Cup with England and scored more than 180 league goals in a career spanning 22 years. After retiring as a player, he had a 15-year career as a manager which included spells in the top flight of English football with Portsmouth, Southampton and Manchester City. One of the best midfielders of his generation, he was inducted in the English Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

@Gnasher , George Best?

Chris Kamara, unbelievable Jeff!

David Beckham or David Seaman. I’m sure there are plenty more.

E = Edward
Edward Paul (Teddy) Sheringham.

Edward Sheringham?

When Brian Clough signed Teddy Sheringham from Millwall for Nottingham Forest in 1991, he immediately asserted his authority by refusing to call him “Teddy,” insisting on using his birth name, “Edward”

According to accounts of their first meeting at the City Ground:

  • Clough’s introduction: As Sheringham walked down the corridor, Clough approached him and said, “Ah, you must be Edward Sheringham”.
  • The correction: Sheringham replied, “Yes, boss, but I’d prefer it if you called me Teddy”.
  • Clough’s response: Clough dismissed the request, saying, “Welcome to Nottingham, Edward”

Sheringham later recalled that Clough insisted on using “Edward” to establish that he was the boss from the very first minute.

Golden Gordon Ottershaw, I know @JohnnyBoy81 has mentioned George Best earlier so that can be G alongside Gordon, who although not technically a player, (although I imagine he kicked the ball a fair bit in his time), was Barnstoneworth United’s greatest fan, so he was a vicarious footballer through supporting the game.

Hello @JohnnyBoy81 - I have just figured out why you are coming with the names that you are

I’ll now do what I often do which it to ramble on - it keeps me amused and it kills a bit of time.

To make this a let tedious for those who might not be that interested I’ll ramble on here

My rambling theory on why JohnnyBoy81 is naming the players he is ...

Sometimes the written word can lead to misunderstandings or mis-interpretations which can then go onto have implications such as people getting angry, feeling offended etc. In most cases the author does not intend to cause this, but occasionally they do - this can be for example, use of iron-e which I think is typically British and I think some or most Americans tend not to get!

Because it is written it can sometimes be difficult to sort out quickly which further adds to the distress (for those who feel distressed) and worse still, in trying to correct the written misunderstanding with another written misunderstanding can often make things worse leading to broken relationships etc. This is all very sad because what is this? It is just words after all. When I were lad, my little sister once said to me

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words cannot hurt me!”

I guess I might have been cussing her or something and I know this is not a misunderstanding strictly speaking since the act of cussing is deliberate and intended.

So what’s my point and what is JohnnyBoy81 doing?

@Gnasher has set the quiz, but English language being what it is, and the way in which Gnasher has set the quiz has led to what I now believe to be a different interpretation or understanding of the nature and rules of the quiz as intended by Gnasher.

To try to explain and hoping not to make things even more off tangent.
My interpretation and understanding of how Gnasher meant this quiz to run.

How Gnasher expects the game to be played

Quizzers are to name footballers from any country and any era, but one at a time.
The game is played with the names of the footballers going alphabetically from A - Z.
Each quizzer names one footballer and then the next quizzer names the next footballer whose first name starts with the next letter in the alphabet.
The key to this game as Gansher intended it is first names of player in ascending order A - Z and one at a time.

Additional information is optional and rules are flexible inasmuch as fictional players e.g. Roy of the Rovers etc are allowed as a certain quizzer @Rups likes to do this, just because he can and to be fair it does add a different flavour to the game

By way of illustration of how this game is intended to work (at least as how I understand it and I stand to be corrected if I am wrong, which I often am) …

Gnasher started to ball rolling - very cleverly by using Alan Ball a footballer with a little bit of additional information. The intention being the next quizzer would then add a footballer whose first name begins with a B and so on.

So next player might be Bobby Ball
and then Champagne Charlie Nicholas for the letter C
and then Derek Duggan for letter D etc etc etc.

However

Having seen what has happened and especially what JohnnyBoy81 is doing, the rules are a little ambiguous and can be interpreted as has been done by JohnnyBoy81.

So JohnnyBoy81 is simply naming any footballer because he has read the game as being this …

Name any footballer from any country from any era. I’ll start with the first name …

First name being Alan Ball i.e. Alan Ball is the first name in this game. It could easily have been Roy Keane, or Liam Brady or Pat “The Cat” Jennings or indeed the greatest of them all Georgie Best.

So now when I see this it all becomes clear

By golly I enjoyed that. Nothing like a ramble for the brain workout.

@ManjiB , well…when @Gnasher or other people approach those letters, they can be added to the list. Just thinking ahead. PS. for L- Les Ferdinand (since you are going on first name basis).

Having gone off tangent with the previous post, I’d like add a part ducks …

Quiz ramble part deux

Ann - you cannot say something outrageous as this and not explain.
Harry Kane is one of the nicest footballers of all time. He is talented, humble, loyal, no non-sense, a true leader, record breaker etc.

How can he possibly irritate anyone? When you say he irritates you but you don’t know why, he just does, that makes no sense. You must know why he irritates you, otherwise you wouldn’t feel irritated

Beefy - what a character. Single handedly won the Ashes for England as an all-round cricketer, best mates with the great IVA Richards and then turned out for Scunthorpe United.
Went on to promote Revite Medic circulation booster for a long time, raised bucket loads of money walking the length of the country and became a Lord !!

I need to say no more. Now I can say unlike Harry Kane, JT does irritate me quite a lot for reasons well documented

I thought this was actually Eric Morecambe who as it happens would have been 100 years old yesterday? Very funny man and famously owner of Luton Town football clup.

I might be wrong here, but was Michael Palin a Sheffield lad and a fan of Wednesday?

Thank you for indulging me.
