Need advice

There is a gym near me but I have to cross a road and I still haven’t cracked how to go down a step yet.

Ah damn, could you work on that a bit more? The machines at most gyms nowadays, are ideal for people like us. Lots are seated allowing you to focus more on your/leg without having to concern yourself with any stability issues. Even leg work can be seated, the rowing machines or the cycles would also benefit you in your current condition. And they tend to be quiet during the day, the majority are full of old fogeys like myself, all working on regaining our strength and abilities. Maybe make that your target for the new year. It will certainly bring on a lot further

I keep practicing with the step I got and that is my goal for new year

The road you have to cross, is it busy, and is there a designated crossing at all?

Lorraine

The road I live on is a bus route with a high school very close by

Just keep trying to grip thjngs and lift things. I used to try lifting back beans tins, deodorant cans that type of thing. Even if you have to use your other hand to.place the item in your affected one. It is all teaching your brain that your arm/hand is there. I also did things like putting pegs on the side of a tub. Initially most of them missed and disappeared across the room but once ai could get one on I knew I was progressing. A stress ball to squeeze too might be useful. I had one that the eyes popped out of when squeezed. I knew I was getting my strength back when I got the eyes to pop out.

I have just put my hand round a small can of mushy peas but because my wrist won’t turn I had to hold it horizontal.

That’s a good start. Just keep imagining that you are turning your wrist & keep trying too (even if it doesn’t move). It’s all about telling your brain that you have a working arm so your brain recognises it again.

I remember that one. To begin I couldn’t see the point of doing some of these exercises, they’re such boring tedious tasks that you think what’s point, give me some real exercises to do. But once I started relating them to real life such as hanging the washing out on the line then you realise the point of it. More importantly, your brain realises and is more likely to waken up and start sending signals. It’s already started hasn’t it, in your fingers. So the more repetative you get with the finer motor skills exercises the more chance your brain has of remembering and retaining those memories for it to become an automatic action you can do without thinking.

It’s like the best way to memorise a new person’s name is to say their name 3 times in the of conversation with them. But we’ve had strokes, so we have to be even more retitive in our actions with our stroke limbs, because we also have waken up those limbs.

Not sure if that made any kind of sense for you though

It did Lorraine but main trouble I have is that little voice saying what’s the point I’m going to be like this for the rest of my life.

Will be glad when electrode treatment restarts.

Did you read how the transport driver treated me taking me to botox appointment Lorraine?

Oh gosh yes, I read about that. That was atrocious. I’m glad you reported him, hope you hear back soon but likely won’t be ‘til the new year now :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Quick question Anne.

When I’m sat down is it better to have my foot flat on the floor when in my splint or doesn’t it matter

Do you mean as opposed to putting your feet up? I woild say better to have them flat on the floor. Probably not very comfortable otherwise. My physio advised me that I didn’t need to wear my orthotic if I was sat for a period of time as I would get no benefit from it. Not sure what advice you were given by the orthotics people.

What I meant was foot flat on the floor or is just heel on the floor and foot up. Didn’t get any advice from anyone
