Thought I would share some pics of my recent adventures. For anyone thinking about holidaying abroad I would say go for it. It is good for the soul. We did very little as both just needed a rest & I don’t have energy I used to but everything in resort was close by and pretty much flat everywhere.
A little bit of wonky swimming. My affected side tends to be lower in water than non affected but I still have a go. Not much of a swimmer really…never have been. This pool was lovely and warm like getting into a bath.
My biggest issue was the distance from hotel amenities to room as walking a real issue for me. Lesson learnt will contact hotel in advance next time. I was so busy making sure I had walk in shower, airport assistance etc that I never thought about room location. I got round it by making sure I had everything I needed when I went out in morning so didn’t have to go back to room till end of day. Or I sent hubby on a mission
A big shout out to hubby though for wheeling me through airport, getting me on / off plane and generally putting up with a real slow coach.
Absolutely love these photos thank you for sharing them and your experience. I’ve been concerned even ho,idaying in the uk! I guess it’s just go for it. You did a lot of planning we all forget “ something g or other” so next time probably be the first thing you’d ask lol, it didn’t mar your holiday so that’s ok. You look like you enjoyed it in the water, all great for the soul there is life after stroke I like this positive post
Thank you
Thank you Sue. I would say just go for it. So many places are disabled friendly these days. Yes, I had to do a lot of research to find somewhere suitable for my needs even if I did miss the room location piece. But it was worth it. The biggest problem I have found is finding a hotel with a walk in shower and not a shower over a bath. That’s the first thing I look at now - no walk in shower I just move on to look at another place. Our holidays aren’t aa active as they used to be but I am still lucky to be able to get away at all.
Most resorts you can hire a range of wheelchairs/powerchairs/scooters. Maybe just for a couple of days so you can explore the resort. Alternatively do you use a taxi to explore areas away from the resort.
Yes, there were loads of people around the resort with scooters etc on hire. You could even take them onto the beach. I think taxis were fairly cheap there but we didn’t use one.
Lovely photos,we have just returned from Tenerife for the first time.We went to Corfu last year which we have been going to for 14 years but a lot of things are not very accessible.
Thanks so much for sharing these fab pics. I have only been away once since my Stroke for 4 days to test my ability to fly and see how I was in the airport as I had a really funny turn on a train recently so wasnt sure how I would react. Used to go abroad at least twice a year before so its been a big miss.
Hi Sue
Thank you for sharing your photos and experience. It’s a good reminder of the benefits of a holiday in the sun. Last September i had a week in Portugal and certainly benefitted, also feeling more confident in mobility on return. I found hiring the scooter invaluable, especially at the end of the day…i could use it to get to the restaurant when my energy was low.
Next trip abroad will be a step up in challenges. I am doing an Embodied dance course at an ecolodge in Morocco. The challenging aspect will be travelling by train to Bristol, 1 night in hotel room then meeting some fellow participants at the airport.
Blessings to all
