Frustration

I sold my XL because I have a Switch 2 but I also have a standard sized Nintendo 3DS which I use regularly when I want to play games not available on the Switch. Currently, I am playing The Spiderwick Chronicles. My youngest son got for Christmas a handheld game console, modelled on the Nintendo Gameboy that has something like twenty thousand classic games pre-installed on it. Quite incredible.

I’m a bit of a Nintendo brand loyalist, I even modded my Mac Mini to look like an NES. I enjoy the fact that Nintendo is technically the world’s oldest game console company, having been founded in 1889.

@Rups , well researched. The Nintendo Switch 2, a few people I know have it. Honestly, I’m not a Nintendo fan but, I do like the 3DS XL. Mainly because I like playing the brain trainer games among others. I, many years ago was a Sega fan. I still am in many ways. I preferred Sonic the Hedgehog to Mario Brothers. Just recently I bought a reconditioned Sega Mega Drive. It’s great playing the old games again. Sega now develop and co-develop various games. From Sonic to the Yakuza series. I’ll look out the re-modelled Nintendo Gameboy. I also got a mini-SNES with in built games and mini-PlayStation with in built games. I’ve been in the PlayStation camp for a long time. I’ve got a couple hundred games for it (PS4) as well as the previous models.

Apparently, PlayStation is developing a new PlayStation portable. I was never in the PlayStation camp and like to boast to my PlayStation pals that the Switch 2 performs just as well if not better than a PlayStation 4. :joy::joy::joy: Ah, it’s the little things in life that create such joy. But seriously, I too am a Sega fan, mostly from the arcade machine days, I have been known to be seen in the library playing Golden Axe in their retro console room. You say you are not a Nintendo fan, yet you own a XL 3DS and a mini-SNES? That’s borderline, a closet Nintendo fan perhaps? I can’t tolerate Mario, well I can tolerate Mario when playing the games with my son, but have never been drawn to the Mario series of games at all. On the Switch 2 I am playing a game called Sifu where you have to learn and memorise kung fu moves through joycon combinations, it’s a challenging memory workout, especially when encountering four or five baddies at once. I usually play puzzle platformers or isometric puzzle games.

My first console was the Atari 2600.

@Rups , I too have a Atari 2600 (with the wooden dash), great console. Love Golden Axe, one of my favourite fighting games (the best been Streets of Rage series). The reason I saying I’m not a big Nintendo fan is because even though I like the tech advancements, I like the Mega Drive better because I like games that are edgy. As I said, I prefer Sonic to Mario. I also recently bought a bunch of Assassins’ Creed games recently (some are extra content editions) for the PS4. Got them pretty cheap. The reason I also got 3DS XL so I can play while I’m on the tram. It beats watching some eejits texting or talking gibberish loudly on their phone. I also like the educational games (i.e. Dr. Kawashima Brian Trainer games). I prefer the big console for action games or racing games (i.e. Gran Turismo series). I respect the various Nintendo’s but, I’ll stick with PlayStation/Sega Mega Drive. Each to their own, eh? PS, big respect for your taste in games.

I hope that @ManjiB has been following our discussion on Nintendo versus PlayStation because without having used the phrases, it’s a great example of beg to differ and agree to disagree in action. :video_game::video_game::video_game::face_with_hand_over_mouth::face_with_hand_over_mouth::face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Thanks for the tag Rupert
I must confess, I have dipped in and out of this thread without being able to contribute in way, shape or form, which in some ways is a little unlike me as I usually find something to say!

Having been tagged, I felt obliged to read the exchanges between you and @JohnnyBoy81 on the games/game consoles. Having read them, I am really sorry but my head is spinning as it’s all gobbledegook to me :frowning: I am not a gamer and the references to PlayStations and Nintendos mean nothing to me - I am totally unable to relate to any of this and so I can’t follow what you are talking about let alone see the examples of the usage of “agree to disagree” or “beg to differ”. I’m really sorry - I’m going to have to plead ignorance here.

It is the same with the to and for JohnnyBoy is having with Mark Frederickson about classic cars - it’s just way over my head and so I am having to politely sit out.

I tried :frowning:

I don’t play games either, so I sit this one out.

@Rups , fair point. For me, it’s one of the eternal battles. But as mum (RIP) said “each to their own”. Too true.

@ManjiB , I’ve been a gamer for a very long time (since I was 7yrs). I’ve seen the evolution. From stick figures to characters that look like us in real life. As for cars, I’m a petrol head. I love cars. From the humble Mini to a Ferrari SF90 (a great supercar). A friend of mine’s missus ask me for car advice a while ago. I sometimes get asked “Is a VW Golf a good used purchase or a Volvo or a Ford Focus”. I always say it depends. Anyway, I read about them a lot. :slightly_smiling_face:

I have had a few faithful cars in my time - my last one was a Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0i GLS. I bought it used in 2002 with the intention or expectation to using it for one year or two year before it needed replacing (it was a 1993 model), but ended up keeping it until I was forced to scrap it as I could not afford to use it and pay the London Mayor’s regime £12.50 for each day I drove it on the public highway. It was one of the hardest choices I had to make as though inanimate, that car meant so much to me. It was and probably is to date one of my post treasured posessions.

I have just parted with my 15 year old car that I’ve had from new. What a wrench. I would never have moved it on if I could still drive.

@ManjiB , aye I’ve heard it’s getting more expensive to drive in and around London. £12.50 pd…woah. I know the Cavalier your talking about, good car. I knew a neighbours son who recently bought a used car, Vauxhall Cavalier Turbo. A wolf in sheeps clothing. A car that worried the BMW M3.

For me, I often rest by putting on an eye mask and listening to soothing music. My new favourite station is BBC 3 Unwind, I used to listen to Classic FM Calm but found the intermittent adverts not calming at all and having voices shout out at me about winning the lottery or switching energy providers the perfect disruption for breaking a calm spell. I also do a bit of gentle gardening to reset my brain. It’s difficult to balance keeping the mind stimulated and the brain blanked at the same time, that’s why brain resetting activities must be tailored to what the individual enjoys doing but isn’t taxing on brain power. The brain has limited power, running on the equivalent of a 20 watt lightbulb, and it consumes the same amount whether being active or sleeping, it makes no difference, so the key is reducing that consumption by relying on things like autonomic functions (breathing exercises, parasympathetic exercises and meditation) or mind blanking which can include the aforementioned but can also be achieved using procedural memory such as playing an instrument, or doing some task that has been practiced many times in the past. That for me are things like ironing, gardening, &c. And when I finish ironing, my brain is rewarded with a dopamine boost when I look and admire the neatly folded and crease free garments.

@Dexster , nice car. A mate of mine’s missus living in Spain bought a second hand one. Very spacious. Considering they have two kids and a third one due before the end of the year it’s just what they want. Also, a lot of the underneath bits and bobs are from VW.

@Rups , I do something like that when I’m trying to sleep. I usually put the radio on as I try to drift off. I use stations such as Radio 3 Unwind, Skylab Radio or Radio 4 Extra to help me drift off. I put my radio on “sleep mode” and the sound not too loud. 9 times out of 10 it usually works.
