Driving assessment

I am now nearly 6 months post stroke and was referred for an assessment after 13 weeks.

I was initially told by the assessment centre that it should be in the middle of September. By mid August I hadn’t even received an acknowledgement of the form I returned, so I rang. I was told they only come back when they have an appointment, but the persdon answering the phone told me they would email the examiner to try and get me an appointment.

Today I rang to ask what had happened with my referal. This time they just looked in the diary, found the next appointment (9 October) and asked if that was ok.

I accepted the date and time straight away. So it seems it is worth ringing up regularaly!

Oh definitely worth bugging them as it often works. Good luck for your assessment & look forward to hearing how you got on.

Hello @DaveB44. Good luck with this.
I also followed a similar channel- in fact I was never referred, but advised I could self refer by a rehabilitation team. I contacted them and was offered a cancellation. Was very quick and little time for me to overthink it. This was at Walkergate neuro hospital in Newcastle.
You need to have your licence, but I had not surrendered mine and as was not attempting to drive and had no vehicle.
Worth letting people know it is possible to take matters into one’s own hands so to speak.
Hope it goes well, Julia

Hello Everyone
Looking for a bit of advice please, my dad had a Brain haemorrhage & stroke, we were aware he wasnt able to drive for 1 year post stroke, after his appointment with the Ophthalmology in September last year he was told his vision hadn’t improved nor got worse and was told he woulnt be able to drive however we could after 1 year apply for special circumstances driving assessment with DVLA, we filled out all the neccessary forms as did the Ophthalmology department stating that he met all the criteria. We sent this off to DVLA and after a month or teo of waiting we receied a reply stating the following:
"Unfortunately we are unable to accept you application, your revocation on the 8th Jan 2024 was based on inforation we received from your GP during our medical investigations into your fitness to drive which indicated that - you show significant impairment of memeory sufficient t cause disorietation and also the specsavers eye test showed you did not meet the required eyesight standard of fitnes to drive.
It states before your Group 1 driving license re-application can be accepted you are required to supply supporting medical evidence from your GP/Doctor/Consultant that you:

  1. Meet the required minimum eyesight standard of fitness to drive
  2. Have no significant impairment of memeory sufficent to cause disoreintation

It goes on to say although you have provided evidence in connection to your eyesight, you have not supplied any supporting evidence in connection with your memory impairment.

Please can someone let me know if you have had a similar letter and if so how you went about getting this supporting evidence as my dad can drive as we have been taking him our to big car parks when theyre empty and he has adapted very well to his visual field loss

Any help would be very much appreciated

Thanks in advance

I’ve not been through the process but I imagine you’ll need to get this evidence fro. his GP. They may do a referral to an OT or memory clinic who could also assess for any impairment.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Ann

I am having my driving assessment this thursday after months of negotiations withthe DVLA its been difficult and i am going for extreme circumstances, i have a provisional licence and have been driving with my husband for 4 weeks now,i am glad to say i feel as confident as before the stroke even though i have some peripheral damage, its been a long haul and i hope i make a good impression on thursday,it feels strange to drive with L plates after driving for over 60 years!!!

Good luck @sandraplaskow i really hope it goes well for you and you will soon be back on the road again. :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:
