Hi @Mikedob
Thanks for letting me know. I haven’t yet decided but good to hear your experience. If I do end up taking it, I’ll be sure to drink plenty of fluid.
Cheers

Coincidentally, I had blood taken again yesterday, because my kidney function is low. The preparation instruction they gave me for 24hrs prior to the test was to not eat and meats and drink plenty of water.
So naturally I wanted to know why and this is what I found on the internet:
Why can’t you eat meat before a blood test … Last result said my kidney function was low.
In some less common situations, you may also be asked not to eat any cooked meat the night before the test. Cooked meat can increase the level of creatinine in your blood and affect your eGFR results.
eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) is a measure of how well your kidneys are working. Your eGFR is an estimated number based on a blood test and your age, sex, and body type.
Creatinine is a chemical waste product of creatine.
Creatine is a chemical made by the body and is used to supply energy mainly to muscles. This test is done to see how well your kidneys work. Creatinine is removed from the body entirely by the kidneys.
Thanks for this information, it’s very interesting. My current thinking is that my fatigue is caused by brain fatigue rather than anything muscular, so I can’t see that creatine would help - but the only way I’ll ever know is to try it, so I may do in the future but I’m not ready yet to try different supplements.
Cheers

I think Folic Acid might be what cured the fatigue for me. A blood test found I was low in that so the doctor put me on a high dose for two weeks and to continue with the over the counter strength after that. I was about 6/8mths post stroke and had lost a lot of muscle mass at the time too.
And then there’s this about folic acid:
So hopefully its a win win for me with that one Alternatively you could always double up on your fish and protein intake
I’ve had a blood test and it didn’t show I was low in folic acid. I asked the pharmacist and he said if the blood test was okay then not to waste money buying a supplement. I’m really interested in what works for people - but probably won’t take anything just yet, I’m still getting used to the new me!
Cheers

I don’t really know for certain if it was that, it could have just been coincidental that my fatigue abated and heavy legs stopped at that time, who knows.
Message to everyone please stay well clear of creatine, it will mess up your kidneys big time, ignore the hype nobody needs it

Hi Emerald Eyes any updates on your leaking kidneys , I now have a personal interest in this, as have just had confirmation of level 3b kidney decease having lost 50 % of my renal function appears my kidneys had a jolt with the stroke and have not recovered have got a print out of my egfr scores pre and post stroke so not much doubt the kidney damage cannot be reversed so just hoping that my filtration levels increase a bit over time which may get me intp level 3a

Yes, my son even warned me away from creatine for the same reason. With ageing organs, I tend ere on the side of caution and consult with doc/chemist before taking anything like that.
And as far as it goes for my kidney leakage, the doc still doesn’t seem unduly concerned by it, still puts it down to ageing It hasn’t gotten much worse really since first noted in 2016. He did however advise me to reduce my B12 intake to 3 days a week so I’ve just ditched it altogether for now until my next blood test.
He did also switch one of my diabetes tablets as the one I was on wasn’t working well.
Has the doc discussed diet with you, in order to control your blood sugar levels for this or prescribed anything for it?
Can you direct me to your reference for this, a paper, article or something. I’ve never heard of that (not that I take it anyway). I did a trial for six months and it made no difference.
Hi
Do they give you an egfr score for your kidneys?
Wattsy
I have no idea what you mean. I have just found this study, though
Sorry Ian unable to do so, but there is loads of stuff on the internet the logic is that your kidneys have to clear excess creatinine from the blood if you feed your body more creatine you get overload and your kidneys have to work a lot harder to keep the levels down ad normal which long term can cause damage, think i have that correct.

In that case they have not, or not told you, its a blood test that measures the filtration rate of creatinine by your kidneys and the result if a number called your egfr and is an indication of how healthy your kidneys are.
did not intend to open a can of worms and as you have not been advised of your egfr my guess is its ok or you have not been tested
Wattsy
No I didn’t get egfr score, it was a phone consult and I must admit I wasn’t quite with it that day. I’ll have to wait 'til my blood text coming up in a couple weeks. They’re more concerned with getting my blood sugar down as it’s on the rise a little. The new tablet they’ve put me doesn’t seem to be work…yet Maybe it will by the time they do the blood test.
Okay, it sounds like you’re saying you shouldn’t take creatine if you’ve got kidney problems. I’m cool with that. That makes sense.
I do know back in 2016 my Serum creatinine was 78 umol/L (62 - 124)
But they didn’t give any overall score for kidney function.
And you’ve not opened a can of worms, but you have spurred me to fill out my application for access to my medical records. Because with it now being so difficult to have a face to face sit down chat with your gp anymore, I can’t sweet talk them into giving me a printout of my results like I used to
Now the brain is much more onboard I need to get on top of this as I don’t like being in the dark so much
EDIT:
Actually, just checked the NHS app and it does have the latest results. My Serum creatinine is now 82, normal range is between 45 to 84; a year ago it was 75 umol/L. So that is around borderline to high. Anyway, I’ve decided I’m not going to get too concerned with it 'til my gp starts raising the alarm. My more immediate concerns is keeping my blood sugar and blood pressure down
Great they are pretty good numbers, good luck with the others stay well and thanks for input.

What happened with the test results you were due on 14th, I’ve still got my fingers crossed for helicobactor but I’m guessing that’s not the case?
Still waiting for endscopy biopsy results hoping they arrive before i see the doctor on Friday. bloods confirmed stage 3b kidney failure which is not good egfr dropped from 61 to 52 week after my stroke and has continued downward since now 44. Acid reflux still bad and driving me mad doctor says it is a complex issue whatever that means. on it goes now had urine test for proteinuria and doctor will have result when i go on Friday
he wants me to have psa test as well 2 years since my last one, did a home test today which was fine, doing another on thursday to double check. not sure i can deal with anything else.
stressed to my limits right now
