I picked Box 2 because the edge of the opening looked a little like it had been opened. Also, the box was pulled out as though it had been used, and as though the finicky organizer was suggesting that the next party use that box. But, why so much interest in quinoa? A bland and boring (but healthful, I admit) food
I went for box 3 because the best begore date isn’t visible suggesting it has been opened. But 2 definitely looks tattier and like it may have been opened and restuck.
I’m not a quinoa fan either
Well done Ann and Jeanne. I can see the logic behind @axnr911 thinking and it is a very feasible answer. Having checked with the OCD person, the correct answer is actually Box 3.
The tattiness and indeed the alignment of Box 2 is a bit of a red herring.
Well done Ann. Once again you solved the problem
I can see you are finding these puzzles/riddles way to easy and we need to find something more challenging for you
For some reason I find quinoa versatile and it is actually meant to be very healthy and so I have [only recenty] added it to my list of healthy foods which I should eat more of. I use as substitute for rice and it goes very nicely in a salad.
Each to their own I soup pose.
I can honestly say that it was a very lucky guess on my part. I couldn’t think of any other reason for it being box 3 other than the best before date
Ann, you are good at details. I looked again, and I still can’t find the
best before date! Oh well.
Two men are in a desert. They both have backpacks on. One of the guys is dead. The guy who is alive has his backpack open and the guy who is dead has his backpack closed. What is in the dead man’s backpack?
Did the one who is alive eat the food and drink the water of his friend to keep himself alive but as it is closed I don’t think that can be right.
Something that is open saved the one man and something that is closed killed the other man. Hmmmmmmmmm.
I wonder did the men arrive in the desert by aircraft & could the backpacks contain parachutes? Do they come in backpacks? …they look like it when you see people jumping put of planes. Certainly if one didn’t open that wouldnt do you a lot of good on landing.
I think I will stop rambling there and say parachute
I waited a couple of days to give anyone that might want to a chance to guess.
You guessed right! It is a parachute. You are just too smart for my puzzles. But I’ll keep looking.
I was working on this, but didn’t arrive at the answer. I was not even on the track. I was looking for something to incriminate one or other of the two men i.e. a murder or a suicide made to look like murder and so poisonous food or drink came to mind but it did not add up.
Then I wondered what two men were doing in the desert. Were they some sort of archaeologists or possibly marathon (ultra) runners. The thought of them falling out of a plane never came to me and so yet again, I was at a loss as to what might have been in the back pack of the dead man.
As the answer is a parachute, I do wonder if my idea of a murder or suicide made to look like murder could still hold true. Did the investigating officer find any signs of foul play? Was the parachute tampered with so that it would not open? If so, who did it and why?
Anyway, well done to Ann. She’s just too good four these puzzles.
Over to the next puzzler.
ManjiB-- more great ideas for a novel! I guess I’d better keep on looking for puzzles to spur your creative juices! Ann, seems to go right to the heart of the matter. It amazes me.
Here’s another one for you.
I’ll stick with 3 minutes . . . but the last time I did this one it was 3 cats catching 3 mice
Come to think of it, I never find out if the answer was right Or I’ve got a very short attention for these things
Can it be that simple?
I think not, there has to be a CATCH
So what is the catch?
Well, there’s a CAT in the CATCH. What IF anything does that mean?
The question is an IF question.
IF X then Y.
Where is this event taking place?
Is it in an enclosed area or out in the open/jungle. Because guess what? That would make a difference would it not?
When numbers are small e.g. 3, you might assume normality i.e. 3 lions a similar, 3 deers are similar etc. but when numbers start to rise, variants come into the equation. The lions could be of all ages and sizes. The older ones might be experienced catchers (not hunters - this is a game of CATCH, not a hunt) whereas the younger lions might still be a little wet around the ears?
Also, imagine the chaos that would ensue if you have 100 lions and 100 deers and goodness knows what else in the mix. You could have lions bumping into each other, deers running all over the place.
You might get 2 lions going for the same deer and end up fighting over it and so on - total and utter chaos
With higher numbers does the probability of failure increase? (or maybe decrease?) Not sure about that - it’s been a while since I looked at probability.
Having done the analysis, I would suggest that the 100 lions may try to catch a 100 deer, but the likelihood of them all catching a deer is low.
Finally, there is a trick in the question as it talks about Deers and since Deers do not exist, I say the answer is forever. The Lions will NEVER catch the DEERS as the DEERS do not exist.
What is he rambling on about now?
He is being silly/pedantic - Plural of Deer is Deer, oh dear!!!
Thank you for allowing me to entertain you, or to bore you, or to annoy you or to just waste your time.
Have a lovely day - I believe snow has been four cast!!!
Namaste|
Well I wouldn’t mind a night of rain to water the garden, so I don’t have to And that’s another example of Happiness to me
Lorraine
Thanks @ManjiB that has kept me entertained.
I’m going for the easy option though @axnr911 and am going to say 3 minutes too.
Those who guessed 3 minutes are right! So, I will look for another riddle. All this extensive research on my part is definitely worth it to see what ManjiB will come up with to entertain us (indeed you did not bore or annoy, but entertain )and if I can finally, if ever, stump you folks!
Here we go-------
One day, a magician was boasting about how long he could hold his breath underwater. His record was 6 minutes. A kid that was listening said, “that’s nothing, I can stay underwater for 10 minutes using no equipment or air pockets!” The magician told the kid if he could do that, he’d give him $10,000. The kid did it and won the money. How?
My initial thought is that the kid has said he can stay underwater not hold his breath underwater. I wonder if he was in a shower or perhaps he was in a pool with his body underwater but not his head. If that’s the case he deserves the $10,000 because he is very clever
I too look forward to @ManjiB reasoning. They’re very entertaining & better than some books I’ve read.
Holding your breath …
I wonder if the red herrings were references to Magician and a Kid. Perhaps this was done to throw you off the scent, a bit of smoke and mirrors perhaps.
6 minutes seems like a long time, but is it? Then 10 minutes is even longer and so would suggest “impossibility”. But what is Magic? It is sleight of hand, smoke and mirrors but could it also be real?
Is it possible this was some sort of Educational Stunt? It is probably not very well known, but breathing (not your everyday breathing that you do subconsciously) is a very important way to improve your health. Indeed, people have written books on the subject, and some people have even read them
Given the target of 10 minutes is totally achievable [research shows that the current world record for holding breath underwater is 24 min 34.37 sec, this sounds as though this was done as a public awareness stunt by a couple of public spirited individuals, the Magician and his Assistant (all magicians have an assistant) The Kid.
The Kid was actually a disguised adult who had practiced breathing techniques and was easily able to hold his breath for much longer than 10 minutes, but in order to convince the audience this is something they can do, they pitched it at a more achievable level.
Obviously, there are trade secrets involved and which cannot be divulged, but one of the things this act was keen to promote was Breathing Through the Nose.
Breathing through the Nose
To keep it simple, I will reference a podcast and leave a link below so you can listen to it and say that there are benefits to breathing through your nose as below
“It’s a simple way to get healthier gums, a better memory, and improved lung function. How? Well, it may partly be due to a special molecule called nitric oxide. Michael Mosley speaks to Professor Jon Lundberg from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden who made the fascinating discovery that nitric oxide is produced in your nose and travels to your lungs where it has some surprising benefits, including boosting oxygen uptake and possibly helping you fight off infections.”
Of course, some of you will be familiar with this topic and also with the part Nitric Oxide plays in health.
Here is the link to the podcast by the [late] brilliant Dr. Michael Mosley
Perhaps this is jut one thing you might want to take up !!!
ManjiB–Your response was worth waiting for! And I have made a concerted effort since reading it to breathe heartily through my nose. . No, the kid was not a secret agent (Magician’s assistant). Sadly, you have not guessed the answer. I would tell you now (as a reward for your creative discourse) but feel I should give everyone else another stab at it.
Mrs5k- You’re right about the kid being very clever, but have not yet guessed the answer.
I’ll be back in another day to two with the answer.
Feel free to try again.
Uh oh now I’m not sure.
So if he wasn’t in a shower or a pool then he must have been under water in a different way. Hmmmmmmmmmm. it couldn’t be rain as that would be similar to a shower.
Did he then perhaps balance a container of water on his head? A bucket maybe? But then it said he used no equipment. A bucket would be equipment.
I can’t think of anything else so bucket on his head it is
Well, if I am not right and Mrs Ann is not right then what’s going on?
I rather thought that Ann’s suggestion was pretty much on the nose but yet it is not correct
So what exactly is the clever Kid (Johnny is is name I believe) doing to win this rather large sum of money?
Let’s revisit the situation.
The magician gives him $10,000 so the Kid stayed underwater for at least 10 minutes and used no equipment and no air pockets.
Here is how he did it, being the clever little rascal that he is, he used is knowledge of what happens to water when it is cooled below zero degrees celsius and so taking a block of ice he put it on his head and sat there is it melted turning into water. The block was big enough to last for the duration of the bet and so Johnny (the Kid) stayed under water and collected his winnings.
To be doubly sure he chose to sit on a toilet with an overhead cistern (which obviously had water) and so he was covered by being under water and being under it, thereby achieving the conditions of the wager.
That my friends is how Johnny the Kid stayed under water for 10 minutes (whilst breathing through his nose) and earned himself a cool $10,000.
