Stay safe. Use a walker 24/7
Thanks, I donât have any dizziness/vertigo, I just suddenly feel off kilter, but Sophie from healthy balance came to see me yesterday and I will continue with balance excercises 3 x day.
Yes Pando I can so will keep that up along with standing on one leg, raising arms above head is a tester, ie, trying to hang washing on line, one of my goals, but I need to manage getting up off the ground first, another goal.
Thank you Tony good advice
I only have use of one arm, so therapists never considered a walker, part of balance, walking recovery is using my stick until I am proficient and confident with it, I have a family member who has offered to walk outside with me.
Same here. A lot of regression and stuck in this place no matter how hard I work.
Thanks, Roland. I have had regressions and have yet to start progressing again. Thank you for reminding me of eyes closed and standing test. I am going to follow these posts.
It seems to be all about Balance this week, I even had a gym buddy asking me about balance issues yesterday
I had brain stem stroke 3 years ago. I am now unable to swallow and have food, water and meds through a PEG. I accept this and reasons for it eg I had radio therapy on my vocal cords 10 years ago, a tracheostomy fr 18 months and a severe stroke. But balance is the most challenging thing, i feel wobbly and unpleasantly drunk quite a lot the time. it does not seem to be getting better and is very variable. I do endless exercises, take the dog for walks, swim (sort of!), we even employ a âdynamic, physio who is excellent and yet progress is uneven. We are on a long journey and we need to have patience and faith in ourselves⌠yet it is difficult at times. I wrote a series of letters to myself in hospital which I could send you if you like, they are now published as a book⌠I found the process healing and insightful. Itâs called âNow Then.â David
Agree good idea, my dentist does but not the Drâs, am there for bloods at the end of month so will ask about alerts.
Many thanks
Hi, I had friends who kept telling me in rehab hospital to keep a journal, now wish I had.
You must be doing well if you admit to having a severe stroke and you are now walking and getting about. A dog on a lead can be quite challenging.
Have just come back from physio session and it is now clear that my team have come as far as they can with me, the sessions now going forward will be to stop me from deteriorating, any progress it seems will be down to me and what I do at home.
@Annie1 i kept a diary & still do to a lesser extent. I used it so I could track my progress & found it especially helpful to look back on those days when I felt like I was getting nowhere. It was a great reminder of how far I had come.
Hi David @Indra
If youâre happy to share your letters, then I should be pleased to read them. Well done for getting them published.
Best wishes.
My e-mail is: indracongress@hotmail.co.uk Do please send me your name and address and I will send you a copy. One further point about balance and walking. I have found mindful walking, very slowly, quite helpful. Each step is deliberate and if feels like my mind/body is teaching myself how to walk and not shuffle. It may or may not be helpful to others. I too have walked, tight roped miles around the kitchen table. David.
I do my exercises in a corridor or from someone on FB who shows exercises along a kitchen bench. Very useful when waiting for a kettle to boil or something to cook in my microwave.
Hi Annie1 - yes this happened to me also, I was thinking I was getting along ok, then from nowhere started to feel unsteady and had to sit down, was overdoing it, too much reading/concentrating and computer browsing in my case, just had to learn to âslowâ down and try to relax, the unsteadiness has got a lot better over time by that I mean its not as severe or as frequent. (had stroke in October 2024)
Thatâs nice @Bibs - seeing that a witched kettle never boils, you might as well do some exercise while youâre waiting for it to boil
It is so good that you are doing this as you are exercising without even having to think about it as it were. The thing is every little bit counts and so if you do this each time you have a cuppa, youâre probably getting your quota of exercise.
Keep it up and thanks for joining this chat
Hi @twiggy_1951 - well done on learning to slow down and relax. Itâs nice that by doing so, your unsteadiness has got a lot better.
Donât be a stranger now!
Hi ManJiB, slight mistake in my previous post, had stroke in October 2023! how time fliesâŚ
Hi Twiggy - I hadnât even noticed the [deliberate] mistake
Time does indeed fly, and isnât it nice when it does so?
Take care.
