Well, it’s about six weeks since my wife had her slight stroke… she is doing rather well, and has just started getting out and about again, which is good…she WAS eating like a horse, but has now gone back to eating hardly anything at all…is this normal ?..she is also being physically sick a couple of times a day, after not being so for over a week, I am currently trying to get her to go to see our GP, as I wonder if it’s the medication she is on ?..
I think she needs to see a GP to try & work out what is going on. It may be her meds but also could be many other things.
I expect she doesn’t want to eat much if she is being sick. But maybe the lack of eating isn’t helping that either.
My appetite went after my stroke but i was never being sick with it.
You could also ask a pharmacist if it could be the meds. They are very knowledgeable on tablet side effects.
Hope she feels better soon.
Ann
Thanks for that…she has been fine for about a week, and was doing really well…it just seems like a backward step…
@Del80 - Does your GP not do home visits?
It might be easier and less of a strain on your wife?
You are lucky to actually SEE a GP here…all they seem to do is 'phone appointments, which is of little use to anyone…
I am sorry to hear that. I know there are significant differences across the country and the UK and some areas are really badly affected. Phone consultations are becoming the norm.
We are lucky here as the GP has finally got the message that Mum cannot be seen via the phone/video because she cannot speak as a result of the stroke and so an in person examination/consultation is required. They did try a few phone and send photos consultations but after we raised the issue and explained what were doing was not working, they have now noted on Mum’s record that she is an “exception” and home visits and other priorities are needed.
I don’t know if you can discuss this with your GP or the Practice Manager depending on the set up. Also, is it worth flagging it as a concern higher up either in the NHS hierarchy or even going to your local MP.
Care of the elderly is already known to be an issue - ask them what they are doing about it?
Just something to think about. Sometimes we have to raise our voice to be heard. Perhaps now is the time for you to do that.
All the best.
Thank you, she is going to see her kidney consultant, on Tuesday, so will raise the issue with her…if no joy there, then am going to the surgery, and will demand action…whether it does any good, or not, remains to be seen…
I am sure it will - sometimes they are simply “unaware” of the patients that deserve extra help/consideration.
I once attended a carers group when we were asked for suggestions that would help us to do our job. Quite a few carers suggested that the GP practice should be aware of those being cared for and possibly even have a dedicated phone line to ensure priority access. I don’t know what came of that, but as I mentioned earlier, we did manage to finally get the message across that Mum is not your average patient
Wishing you success.
Please bear in mind a stroke can significantly affect the digestive tract due to disruptions in the brain-gut axis, and disrupted function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). It will take a little while to settle.
Thank you…pleased to say, that as of yesterday she is eating again, and fingers crossed she has stopped feeling/being sick…
