My wife is 10 weeks into her stroke. She lost use of left arm and leg. She has many problems but the most painful is her wrist and back of her hand. Has anyone else experienced this. Any help or tips would be appreciated

Hi and welcome to a friendly and helpful site. I am sorry to hear of your wife’s stroke, as her stroke is very fresh getting her hand comfortable will be difficult but in time it can improve. Is your wife under any rehabilitation services like occupational therapist and physio, the reason I asked is you should ask the occupational therapist for a resting splint, I had one in my early years of stroke and still have one now. I tend to put my arm in the splint to help relax the spasms and hold it in comfy position say when sitting at night. I cant upload the pictures but I can put the details of the splint here to google so you can ask therapist for one or purchase one. There is also a soft Isotoner fingerless glove. I can only suggest these or soft massage on the hand and arm. But the splint really did help ease pain and position my hand better ask your occupational therapist for one, I think there pretty standard.

It is very early days yet for her & hopefully things will improve over time.
I don’t have any advice over & above what @MarnieT has said. Hopefully her suggestions will help.

Hi, thanks for the reply MarnieT. She is recieving OT and does have the splints. Unfortunately for her they don’t seem to help the pain. Didn’t realise the spasms stayed with you for years. Any info on things that helped in general would be appreciated as always best to get the first hand advice
Hi not sure what else might help your wife’s pain, she could try a muscle relaxer comes in liquid form or tablets. My GP prescribed them when I had the stroke age 11, then when I was 16 I got accepted on trial in Scotland for Botox injections to help manage and reduced the muscle spasm. I have had huge sucess with the Botox but it’s not successful for everyone. I have been plagued with dystonic muscle spasms for years I am just greatfull under the great NHS service that I have been allowed to receive these injections. Without them I would struggle badly in physical and mental health. Try your GP for a mild muscle relaxer if her pain is worsening and spasms bad. hopefully they might can help.
Thanks Marnie. Got appointment Friday to discuss possibility of Botox .
Good luck, It took me a few years after my stroke to get them, there has been times that the procedure didn’t work. So it’s trial and error, everybody responds differently but I wish you both success! Don’t rule out muscle relaxant ask your GP you can get mild forms.
Hello @Robloz - This is just to say “Hello” and welcome to this community.
I note you have had some very good responses to your introductory post and with nothing further to add, other than to say I expect she will make a very good recovery given time and the right help and support
I wish you and your wife all the best.
