Walking unaided

It has been a long held personal believe that we as human beings, can within reason do almost anything. In life there are many examples where people do remarkable things and there are many more that we simply don’t know about. The world might be getting smaller but it is still huge and there is so much we do not yet know.

As a carer trying to help my Mum, one of my desired wishes is to help her stand and then walk. I know it is something she can do and she will do but I haven’t found the one thing that needs to be done for that to happen. We are working towards that goal and we remain confident or optimistic that one day for us this will be a reality.

Whilst we are in this frame of mind, I feel there are others, possibly reading this who may not yet feel that confident or optimistic. In part this could be because they have been given misinformation along the lines that there is a limit (time or other) after which you do not recover, or worse you will not recover because of your condition (severity of stroke or resulting damage). This is something we never subscribed to and hence our determination to carry on and we keep making progress towards our ultimate goal.

I hope that if you are reading this, I can give you that little bit of push and ask you to have faith or belief that you too can do this.

If you think it cannot be done, or if you have been told you will never walk again, think again. Watch this video and think to yourself “How do I do this? Yes, I too can do this”.

@pando the creator and poster of the above video has many inspirational posts on this forum and his stroke recovery journey is very interesting. He has a YouTube channel where you will find more inspirational stuff.

Learn to walk unaided - you were born to walk

There are many cliches or sayings that you can use to inspire yourselves …

  1. Where there’s a will there’s a Hay
  2. It’s all in the mind
  3. I get down, but I get up again etc.

The below is one of my favourites

If as a result of reading this post, just one of you walks unaided, that will be a wonderful thing. If two of you walk unaided that will by doubly wonderful.

Hey @ManjiB

Great post & thanks so much for your kind words of encouragement. The power of the mind is huge; as they say, it’s “mind over matter.” I find progress has come in little spurts ; it is anything but regular. Another thing is to know that nothing is “black & white” but there is always a phasing in / out: So, it’s not like yesterday I walked with a stick and today, without. It’s a transition. And lastly, a mental struggle and problem overcome is usually accompanied by a physical struggle… and success. Mind and body make the journey together. The mind is slower to accept progress that the body makes.

Mind over matter !

I strive every day to get back to normal walking & i remain hopeful that it will happen. On that day you will hear the celebration from miles away.

In the meantime though I adapt to my current situation because I need to live some sort of life. Restricted to some degree yes but a life none the less.

I wish for everyone to reach their happy level but also know that for some, no matter how hard they try, they will never get to that place…somewhere along the journey but not all the way.

Here is too a happy place for everyone.
