Travel assistance

Hi folks

Does anyone have experience of mobility assistance at Bristol airport please? I am travelling to Morocco next week which is both exciting and daunting. When I flew last year one airport was great the other’s assistance challenging. i’d like to know what the situation upon arriving at the airport is like and also getting on the plane for someone who’s not in a wheelchair. There was a big step from lift to plane which was very hard to manage. Any experiences or tips very welcome.

Thanks and blessings

Hi Val,

when you check in at the assistance counter at Bristol Airport they have always asked me if I need a lift to get in the plane or can I manage the steps / ramp. I once said I could manage the ramp, but I found I couldn’t ! They pushed my wheelchair up the ramp (non standard).

If at assistance check-in you insist you need the lift they will arrange it. For me it depends what sort of day I’m having / did I sleep well etc. When is it you’re flying ?

@SingingDeer I have not flown since my stroke and do not want to atm. I wish you happiness for your trip. Call the airport or the airline carrier and they will help. :four_leaf_clover:

Hi Roland

Thanks for info. It’s actually the lift that bothers me re possible gap between it and plane. It’s not possible for me to take a wheelchair unfortunately.

Flying on 28th Jan.

I hear you, Val ; I know that hurdle - ask for someone to steady you and I’m sure they’ll come running. They did with me… good luck ! R

Most airports will supply a wheelchair (and someone to push) if needed. I usually have to transfer to an airport chair at check in while my chair gets loaded with the baggage.

Alternatively you could hire a chair for the period of your holiday.

Aye, I found they were brilliant. I got wheeled all the way through, fast tracked queues as I get wobbly standing for too long and parked in designated areas. The only thing that was different was on the way back, they didn’t meet me anywhere because we had to catch a bus from the plane. If you book special assistance and need it on the return at the airport, make sure they know.

I can’t speak for Bristol, but Gatwick has always been really good. The airline you booked with should have been informed that you can’t manage steps and someone will be there to assist. There should be some sort of assistance desk/office at the airport. Report to them and they will handle it from there. The fun starts at the other end! Some countries leave a lot to be desired when it comes to special assistance and they all handle things differently, but things are improving.
