Today I have a day to myself, a rarity in recent times, although that rarity will be taken up with washing, cleaning and dealing with the accumulated twaddle the postie has deposited on our mat!
Karen is doing well. They have taken her off the ventilator, reversed the tracheostomy, and now all that remains is her feeding tube. My complaint to the hospital of Wednesday afternoon brought fulsome apologies and instant action, and now they involve me in everything.
A bit late in the day we had a DNR discussion, but again they were most apologetic about why it had taken them so long to address certain matters which should have been obvious from day one.
Karen can talk, although its very much a whisper and you have to strain your ears to make the words out, but they all seem quite content with her progress and hope to move her from ICU to a dedicated stroke ward within the next 24-48 hours.
Please make the most of this.
You deserve it and you have a good opportunity to recharge - you know Karen is in safe hands and she is making good progress.
She can rest and you can rest.
Well done for speaking up and getting heard - this is very important and it’s good that the hospital has acknowledged your role and involvement in Karen’s care.
It’s not that unusual to be in ICU that long. I was in a coma for 3 weeks. Once Karen is on a ward the real work of recovery will start. Remember that recovery is a marathon, Karen will not get better overnight but it can be done.
That’s a good outcome. Stroke is a complicated injury, and I don’t blame medical professionals for working stuff out as they go along as it is that kind of injury.
So pleased to hear you update news and that Karen is progressing. It may seem slow, but unfortunately it will take time. Karen has done well in herself too and she is fighting back. Give yourself some time as well. Carers need support and rest too! I’m glad you spoke up and are now involved more in Karen’s care, you should be included in most of the aspects of Karen’s needs, progression and daily care. I wish you both well, hang in there you have both come along way since your first post. Its great news
