I suffered a thalamus stroke a month ago which started as numbness and tingling of my left side, mainly effecting my hand, face, leg and toes. No weakness at all. I’d been to see a gp before that as id been getting symptoms on and off that wouldn’t last long, she didnt think it anything to worry about thought it positional problem with my neck and sent me to see a physio. A week later i was in a&e having ct scan which showed nothing when symptons didn’t go off. I was discharged next morning but they arranged for me to return 2 days later to an assessment unit. Even drs there thought it was migraine to blame. An MRI confirmed a stroke. The news floored me, im 58. I never actually saw anyone from stroke team as its at another hospital 40 miles away. They did get advice from them and i was put on blood thinners straight away and started on atorvastatin. I have since had a phone consultation with stroke consultant who told me that it was only a mild stroke and things should clear up in time. I go for 24 hour ecg tomorrow and have a follow up with a stroke nurse early Feb. I feel rather left in limbo, i spoke to gp as i started getting awful muscle stiffness in my ribs, shoulder and toes but didnt get any answers really. Im also getting awful burning across my hand, it seems worse when i get warm. My palm gets so sore as day wears on. While stiffness has eased in my ribs and shoulder, its intensified in my face. When i touch around my lips on left side it feels like cold burning. Im just hoping this is all a good sign and just normal road to recovery. I know its very early days in my stroke journey, but for a person that has been the one to look after others and keep busy im finding it hard to cope with. I found myself looking online for exercises to do to help. I wondered if anyone else has suffered similar after stroke.
Yes, many have the symptoms you describe, myself included. Also many suffer to a much further degree than you. Burning is from the stroke ; ribs stiff is the fascia post stroke. Peripheral neuropathy is normal post stroke ; usually doesn’t start straight after stroke, but waits before being a nuisance ; say 18 months post stroke. I can only generalize, as damage to the brain varies. Central post-stroke pain (CPSP) is a chronic neurological condition that can occur after a stroke not wanting to alarm you, because I think your recovery will go well. But nobody can predict a stroke with much accuracy.
Good luck, and hope it get better with time, ciao, Roland
Your stroke sounds very similar to mine Anne, mine happened during a migraine attack, the whole of my left side went numb and tingles,
Which feel sore as the day draws on…… I can literally draw a line down the middle down my nose and torso, I also get incredible heavy stiffness in my leg, torso and arm, I had no other symptoms, no drooping face weakness or memory problems, my stroke also was only diagnosed by MRI, nothing showed on the CT scan…I was lucky though to be in hospital 4 days though only two in a nearby stroke unit…. Im now under the community stroke team, who are amazing coving all needs of a stroke victim, I see the physio, OT team and Bowel and Bladder team, I have a number to call for any worries or queries, it maybe worth you finding if you have a community stroke team nearby?
Hi @Anne221 and welcome to the community. Your description sounds very similar to someone who posted yestersay @Sunshine55 & I see they have already commented on your post. To save typing it all out again I have added a link to tyeir post so you can read through some of the comments there.
You could try the Stroke Association helpline for advice on any local support networks that may be able to help you.

There’s also the Stroke Association online activities which may interest you. They do some exercise sessions and some peer support sessions.
Best wishes

Thank you for your reply @Sunshine55 . Mine too happened whilst having a migraine with flashing aura. Even the shorter episodes which were obviously TIA, they too had migraine auras. I think thats what confused the doctors. Yes i could run a line down my nose too and everything on the left is effected, including my eye lid, though that tonight feels bit better as well as some feeling has returned into one finger tip and part of my palm. I put that down to the fact ive been using therapy putty to exercise my hand every day for 2 weeks. ( i read online about that) i agree the soreness is awful, i sometimes struggle to hold a fork in my hand its too painful.
We do have community stroke team in our area as my husband was referred to them when he suffered a stroke 3 years ago but I need a referral from stroke team. I will definitely ask the stroke nurse at my next appointment. The consultant did mention i could try pregabalin if things didn’t improve but im reluctant to go down that route, as my husband had those and made him worse.
Hope things improve for you too soon
