Taking the piss

the day after my stroke, still partially paralysed on my left side, I insisted to the nurse that I could take myself to the toilet, after some back and forth she agreed, as long as they could wheel me to the toilet in a wheelchair, getting in and out of the chair was harder than dragging myself across the ward. Standing in front of the toilet with a left hand that wouldn’t work and a left leg that spasmed…I pissed everywhere but the toilet.

any other funny stroke anecdotes out there??

This isn’t exactly funny but I have occasional epilepsy after my stroke age 68. I am now 76.Today I realised I was a ‘story champion’ for epilepsy action. I was asked if I’d like to be in an article in the daily mail. The press department wrote an article about me. It was very true to my experience. I then realised I had told my story two years ago and forgotten! Old age!

awesome. things like this are great, there was a time I may have been embarrassed by something like that, but now… it happens.

before I would hammer on every point in a conversation no wiggle room. Now, i hear myself saying ‘you might be right’ more often, letting the little things go…

@Jamie hi Jamie there is no book for our mishaps. We learn and we move forward.

I remember trying to squeeze the toothpaste onto my toothbrush with use of 1 arm. Let’s just say it didn’t go where expected. It was a great feeling though when I did eventually (a long while after) get some toothpaste in the brush. I knew i was improving at that point.

2023, and I shared it on the forum … one night I was desperately looking for my phone in the dark, using the torch on my phone. That’s how confused I was.

I had my stroke last summer.

1st of November I thought,

“Right, I’m getting in the loft and getting the Christmas tree down!”
I was half way up the ladder when I realised I just didn’t have the strength to hang on, let alone carry anything down. Plus I was wearing flip flops and I was home alone.

I had a vision of being found cold and twisted at foot of the stairs that evening, so I gingerly climbed back down.

Total brain bypass. Scary.

I didn’t tell my husband.:face_with_peeking_eye:

I love the didn’t tell my husband bit.

I hate to admit I’m a faller. Sometimes it was witnessed and I got scooped up by passers by, when all I wanted was to lie there, get over the shock, and take stock!

My wish has been granted in the garden. When trying to weed I fell into a fence, into a bush, onto the lawn. I’ve learned getting scooped up can be helpful, learned to love bushes and found I can get up by myself. No help was coming, and I didn’t tell my husband! ( He’s a proponent of scooping).

Yes, exactly!

Do you find that falling seems to happen in slow motion? To me, it’s like,

“Oh eff, I’m going, I’m going, I’ve gone…”

Providing I’m uninjured, I find it slightly amusing. Like you, whilst weeding, I lost my balance and fell.

Luckily it was into the ivy, not the pyracantha. I did giggle to myself.

May all your landings be soft

I only just got this! :joy::joy::joy:

Yes! It all happens and you can’t stop it! The witnessed ones esp I knew I wouldn’t make it!

My neice in law suggested I rule out other causes of falling as it really affected my mobility. I have found bone on bone left hip, which hurts at night, and a dodgy right knee which occasionally collapses! That may have happened anyway. I’m on a list now! The hip injection lasted 3 months.

Here’s to falling without injury!

It’s something I have to re-learn. I used to be a relatively high up martial artist4 dan in mychosen discipline The community are very supportive. Right now rolling and getting up from the floor are like climbing a big hill! Bring in on though! Ask again in 2-3 years!!

Wow, that’s impressive.

Ok, I need to learn, you just need to relearn. :joy:

I think determination counts for a lot. I have faith in you

@HighHopes

This made me smile Thankyou! My falls are usually in the garden and yes they are fairly slow motion! Going , going , can’t save myself - down! So far no injuries, I like the fact I’m on my own and can get up undignified in my own time and I’m more concerned if I’ve squashed a plant

It was pathetic, I spent a good half hour searching for my phone with my phone before realising. I had severe brain fog at the time and was in another world.

Ah, good old brain fog :face_with_symbols_on_mouth::joy:

If you’re uninjured, no plants were squashed and there were no witnesses, did it actually happen? Nah, it’s all good :+1:
