Swimming for excersise

Me again

Now my partner is 7 months post stroke.. we went swimming yesterday.
Everywhere was aching,

Expecially affected side.

I was wondering would swimming help with the numbness of his 3 fingers on affected side.

Can’t say whether or not swimming will help with sensory issues but it is certainly beneficial for movement and muscle rehabilitation, since we humans once crawled out of the oceans at some point, I’m sure it is coded in our DNA somewhere. I have no access to a pool, but I managed to go wild swimming last week and plan on doing it again since the river spot I live by is only one of two in Wales that has been granted Bathing Water Designation.

I don’t know if it will help with numbness but it is definitely good exercise and a great way to strengthen up. And it can’t do any harm. I’m not a big swimmer but have been known to spend time in a pool on holiday. I now swim wonky but I can get around the pool ok.

Yes, swimming and aquatic therapy (hydrotherapy) can be highly effective in helping manage or reduce numbness, sensory changes, and mobility issues after a stroke.

Looked it up on line

Hi Claire,
Im late with this but if it helps - I had a back injury many years ago the backs of my legs and particularly soles of feet numb after I couldn’t feel the floor wen standing. While not the same thing, I feel swimming definitely helped and full feeling returned to legs and feet over 2-3 months.
Im not an expert; improvement obviously cant be taken for granted & any improvement u get post stroke will almost certainly take much longer i would think but no doubt others with relevant experience will know better than me. I can’t think swimming will do other than help. It may be best to consult with your Dr or physiotherapist first as applicable.

Aww lovely thank you so much. That’s great it worked for me. Ill contact the doctor

yes it helps. increasing circulation is key. which 3 fingers, and what patterns and symptoms accompany this numbness? Post-stroke numbness is often related to central nerve damage.. so it’s complicated! but keep swimming, gently with precautions for his shoulder on the affected side (shoulder subluxation risk).

On his right hand. Its his thumb and the 2 fingers next to it xx

please let me know if cold water on his hand changes things. Just something to try out; could be revealing.

He does say when hes cold his hand hurts?
