Stroke Zine-Book review. Marigolds, Myrtle and Moles. Alan Titchmarsh

I was given a bag of ‘old’ books the other day, oh what a delight to find some little gems amongst them. I may just share some of them with you at a later time.
Herewith today, Marigolds, Myrtle and Moles. Author-Alan Titchmarsh. Published by Hodder and Stoughton 2020.
I have always admired Alan, (a fellow Yorkshire tyke) for his gardening prowess but in recent years as an author. This book has the sub-title ‘A Gardeners Bedside book’ so it is not a guru’s guide to your petunias. It is a book of poems, muses and Alan’s subtle humour. As he says, his deep profound love of the natural world grows in later years. That shines through with the sentiments he portrays. One poem begins;
‘Eternal Father, cure my doubts
And keep the aphids off my sprouts’.
His poems are a diverse collection, from Why does the ‘Willow Weep?’ to ‘The Slug’. ‘Brown Fingers’ vies along with ‘Good Queen Bess’. ‘The Wasp’, he asks what is the point? along with ‘The Prowler’ of whom he says ‘intense as Cumberbatch’.
This is definitely a dip in now and again book, each time to make me smile.
I have searched the usual book purchase sites and found it is available through most of them. So have a little smile, even if we can’t garden as he does, we can share ‘his deep profound love.’ Enjoy. Best wishes Norma
