Stroke Zine A grand day out

Hubby and I decided to go for a day out. Now here in God’s Acres there are so many lovely places to go, its a hard choice. But I opted for Haworth. It was all our yesterdays for me as I was born and brought up in the area. I went to school in Haworth, our local cinema was in Haworth and the train ran through to Keighley where mam used to do all her shopping and meet up with my aunties for a gossip.
Hubby and I wandered round for a bit, ending up near the station. Much to my delight there was a steaming train waiting. I just had to do what all us kids used to do and stand on the nearby bridge as the train huffed its way down the line. Two young boys with dad were stood open mouthed as this mad woman stood surrounded by steam, laughing her head off. They were bemused as I told them that as a child I used to travel to school on the train and it cost one and a half pence either way. I told them that sometimes I was a bit naughty and spent my money in the little sweet shop that used to stand by the bridge. That meant I would have to walk home which angered my mam a great deal! I told the boys that my uncle used to have a coal yard which not only supplied the villages with coal but also the trains. This fact too far for them between coal and the train. What was coal and what had it got to do with the train? Ah the innocence of youth. A wonderful day, rounded off by pie and peas in the Black Bull. I’ll bet that I couldn’t climb up that street today! Best wishes Norma

Oh I love that. I often enjoy memories of past times. Glad you got to relive that memory. The boys probably spent the rest of tge day quizzing their dad about coal and trains.
