Stroke Care and Quality of Rehab

Just came across this article. Worth a read.

I link also to another article on similar theme posted by @EMG72 to collate material in one place.

Question is who is going to listen to this?
It’s good there are these articles but who is going to take up the cause and raise its profile where it matters?

Stroke care does seem to be a postcode lottery but I guess that is the same for other illnesses too.

Whilst the NHS remains strapped for cash & staffing levels low I doubt things will change but that doesn’t mean people should be treated inappropriately or just not treated or shouldn’t try to get things changed.

The NHS, when it was set up, was never meant to be dealing with a lot of what it does these days & I guess that means we can’t have everything.

@ManjiB For what it’s worth, I believe we’ve gone past the rubicon where the NHS is concerned. No-one is coming to rescue it so it’s very doubtful anything is going to positively change even if someone who would listen could be found. It’s pretty clear we’re being encouraged (and maybe coerced🤔) to take charge of our own health now which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it is if it’s at the expense of not being able to access the care we need when we need it.
I’m not surprised staff are unhappy and demotivated. It must be horribly degrading to be so understaffed that standards have to be dropped to unacceptable levels. And an horrific situation for those patients who are trapped within a ‘healthcare’ system that no longer cares or has their best interests at heart. I know it’s not like this everywhere - yet - but it seems to me we’re pretty much on our own and it’s only going to get worse.

Hello @Trace57 - what you say is true, but I think there has to be something that can be done.

You might be familiar with “Mr. Bates vs The Post Office” about the sub-postmasters and the scandal of The Horizon computer system. Somehow we have to start the ball rolling and then pick up momentum.

Mr. Bates managed to get one MP on board and that MP raised it in the commons. Something similar needs to happen for the scandal that is post-stroke care.

The Stoke Association - this community has how many active members?
Let’s say it is ~ 4500 members.

If we all write to our local MPs we might cover how many MPs?

Then we need one MP to bite.

Just as an example, I am pretty sure @EMG72 has had help from her MP. Could this be a building block?

What if we can somehow get their attention and then keep adding more information.

It is not necessarily about the NHS - they are already reforming and looking to do some care in the community. They are using Pharmacists to to do some of the things the GPs used to do.

The same can be done for stroke care - the needs have to be identified, the skills shortages identified and then how these can be addressed.

We know that physiotherapy is a key element in the recovery/rehab process. So get more neuro physiotherapists trained and made available for stroke support.

These journalists who are writing in the press - can they be drawn in?

These are just thoughts but it is not something we can leave to happen. We have to start the ball rolling.

Let’s get our heads together and see if we can’t come up with somethink.
