Morning all…..I had a stroke one year ago which has affected my left side quite badly. My speech and memory have not been affected but my mouth seems to have changed so that I can’t bite properly with my front teeth and my back teeth all feel out of alignment. Also pronouncing s,s is difficult as my tongue feels all wrong and so my mouth makes a funny shape now when I’m talking and I can’t lick the front of my front teeth if that makes sense. Also my voice is much weaker and sometimes it’s an effort to talk. I just wondered if any of you lovely people have experienced anything similar or have any tips?would love to hear if you have…![]()
We all know that stroke affects the arm and leg. We tend to forget that it can affect all of your body. I lost my back as well as the left side of my mouth. It did come back after a while. I’m sorry I can’t remember how long it took to return.
Someone on here advised me to use chewing gum (if that’s safe for you?). I did and it helped enormously- I think it exercised the muscles and who knows maybe neuroplasiticity came into play?. Anyway it had a positive effect for me . Hope this helps…..
What a good suggestion!
I also had problems with my speech and pronouncing the letter ‘s’. I still think my pronunciation isn’t right, but no-one else notices it. I had a speech therapist after my stroke and had mouth exercises to do, which I did religiously, and I improved. There are still parts of my jaw and gums that are numb if I overdo things, but my speech is sufficiently back to a level where I can sing in a choir and do amateur dramatics.
I’m still having problems with communication after eleven years. For some time I read out loud from a book about jazz guitarists every day before watching the news on TV.
I stopped doing it recently thanks to other problems but think it’s time I got back to doing it. My wife would listen and say nothing except when I spoke well and then she would congratulate me. She takes no prisoners so to get her approval would make my day.
