Despite my stroke of Nov I find myself still forgetful of words. This is very annoying. I can be chatting and suddenly find the name of a thing, shop, town missing ! Names are another missing item. How long does it take for memory to recover? Or is it not memory?
I’m over 4 years post stroke and I found that my memory didn’t really improve until tha the last year or so. In fact I nearly came skipping home the other day after having a rather intellectual conversation for 20mins with a neighbour. Without getting stuck for words once. I was really quite chuffed with myself, you wouldn’t have known I had aphasia ![]()
It’s one of those things that has to build up gradually over the years, it comes on it fits and starts as opposed to all at once.

It is difficult to say how long it will take as it varies for everyone. I am 3.5 years on and still have trouble from time to tome especially when I am tired / fatigued. You are still early days yet even if you don’t think so. Just keep trying to recall names / words etc they should eventually start to stick.
Not knowing how old you are, I thought I would just add that this happens as you get older, so it is not just a by-product of having a stroke. I am not sure if doing puzzles etc. is something you are able to cope with but they recommend that as you get older.

That’s so uplifting @EmeraldEyes, I skipped with you I can imagine how chuffed you were. We amaze ourselves at times don’t we!
Yes, I’m almost a year past stroke, sometimes I need to pause and search in my mind for a word I’m looking for. I’m hoping it gets better
