Statins and grapefruit

There was an item on BBC1 this morning that suggested eating grapefruit can effect statins.

I have recently been prescribed statins and on the box it actually says not to drink more than one small glass of grapefruit juice per day.

Not sure why ?

Regards Sue

“Certain classes of drugs — most notably statins — are metabolized (broken down) in your intestines by an enzyme called CYP3A, which normally reduces the amount of drug that enters your bloodstream,” they noted.

“Grapefruit juice contains compounds called furanocoumarins that inhibit CYP3A from functioning properly. Consequently, more of the drug is absorbed, making it more potent than intended — even toxic in some instances.”

It says on my statin box not to have grapefruit juice with them. I think a very small amount is ok but not too much. I don’t like grapefruit so its no hardship for me.
