Has anyone else watched Small Prophets (Beeb)? Thoroughly enjoyed the first series which I watched in its entirety last night
. I normally don’t binge watch even if all episodes are available, preferring to savour each day with a meal, but couldn’t help myself. Have also started Lord of Flies, not sure what to make of it yet as have only watched the first episode, but pleased to have some fresh telly to pass the time, for me, it’s been a bit of a drought lately.
Small Prophets is a British sitcom created, written and directed by Mackenzie Crook of Detectorists fame.. Set in and around Manchester,
I, defo, won’t be missing that.
Thanks @Rups ![]()
Lord of the Flies was my ‘O’ level English Literature study book, back in the day.
I couldn’t, shouldn’t, wouldn’t, mustn’t, daren’t, won’t, miss this either.
Two very, very special and valuable gems somehow brought into the light.
Not to be passed over, ever.
‘My precious!’ shouts Gollum.
‘Smeagol’ smirks ‘Twice Over!!’.
I haven’t but I shall look it up.
Haven’t watched yet, but they’re on my list. I have just watched Black Shore (BBC) , excellent if you like Scandi noir although it is made in Ireland.
I watched the first episode of Lord of the Flies yesterday and loved it. It’s attracted some criticism but I thought it portrayed the disturbing, disorienting events marvellously and some of the performances were exceptional, especially from the lad playing Piggy.
I’ll give Small Prophets a go.
I think most of the criticism seems to be with the technical choices and also, sadly, the script but with so little emphasis on exploring the great resource of literature to the small screen these days, this adaptation sort of reminds me of the ambitious novel to telly screen adaptations of the 1970s which endeavoured to use technical advances in filmmaking as part of the narrative rather than just show everything as a portrait with continuity editing wholly to punctuate the storyline.
I’m just pleased they’ve done it and slapped it on telly for people like me who don’t watch soaps or light entertainment. I’d love to be able to see more novel to telly adaptations. I am an avid fan of Dennis Potter and probably have that mindset. I also think theatre has its place on telly too with adaptation of plays being very suitable for the small screen.
Small Prophets
We binge watched it this evening. Hilary loved it too.
Thanks, great recommendation. @Rups
(you know what my stuff looks like)
keep on keepin on

end screen said – to be continued
great!!
Small Prophets looks good. I’ve downloaded it in preparation for a long haul flight next week (I’ll probably do the same with Lord of The Flies after watching Ep. 1 last Sunday).
Another series I’ll be downloading, is “How To Get to Heaven from Belfast”written by Lisa McGee (Derry Girls) on Netflix.
I had this on my download list and watched the first episode last night. I really enjoyed it, not quite as funny as detectorists but looking forward to watching the rest of the series over the next week or so.
Thanks Rupert - I’ll add this to my watchlist.
I have just finished watching Night Manager - didn’t like series 2 very much and only just seen series 1 on iPlayer as I didn’t see it when it first aired.
I’m also watching Little Drummer Girl and again I am wondering why. There was a time when I would switch off if something doesn’t hold my attention or seem worth watching, but for some crazy reason these days I am compelled to watch them, perhaps to see how bad they can really get.
Haven’t seen it. Any good?
Yes! Watched four episodes now. My wife had big haemmorage exactly 2 years ago. Hasn’t been able to watch a film, too much to follow, doesn’t want violence, aggression etc. This has hit the spot. Worth paying the licence fee for stuff like this..![]()
