Hi
Had my last stroke in November 2023. In rented housing, terraced house, but finding it hard to get around, climb stairs etc due to loss of mobility
Applied with council as my housing assn can’t help or offer assistance.
Sent ALL paperwork but no, the council will only consider me GENERAL NEEDS BAND D. Only available properties are upstairs flats I couldn’t access even if I wanted to, but they keep recommending 3rd floor flats with no lifts!
Contacted and recontacted them since APRIL and got nowhere.
Current property I am in has 10 steps to front, 2 very steeps steps (over 18 inches each) and access through neighbours garden to back door but couldn’t get mobility scooter up doorstep into house so mobility scooter is as trapped in the house as I am
Banging my head against a brick wall trying to get moved and don’t know where to try next
In South Yorkshire. Any advice? CAB any help?
Great thorough reply from @SimonInEdinburgh
If you don’t still have any consultants involved in your recovery your GP can also support you by writing to the local council.
Best of luck @soulbanshee

Thanks. Yeah, Blue Badge on the way. Registered partially sighted
These things always turn out more difficult than they should be. Often councils don’t see you as a priority unless you are homeless.
Try a letter from your GP to support your request. If it was me I would also speak with Citizens Advice & your MP to see if they can help.
Good luck.
Had a letter from Sheffield Housing today refusing to upgrade me from General Needs D. Meaning I have to apply for 3rd floor (without lift) eg., that I wouldn’t be able to even access
Offered suggestions include multistory flat above 9th floor
That sounds impractical and ridiculous. I think I woukd definitely be talking to my MP & maybe the press?
I might try him, I tried him about a decade ago and it took him six month for a non-committal reply, so I don’t hold out much hope
Going through this currently, get an OT to access your home and a referral to a Community social worker from Accessable homes might start the ball rolling, good luck
