Rehousing after stroke - public rented

Hi
Had my last stroke in November 2023. In rented housing, terraced house, but finding it hard to get around, climb stairs etc due to loss of mobility
Applied with council as my housing assn can’t help or offer assistance.
Sent ALL paperwork but no, the council will only consider me GENERAL NEEDS BAND D. Only available properties are upstairs flats I couldn’t access even if I wanted to, but they keep recommending 3rd floor flats with no lifts!
Contacted and recontacted them since APRIL and got nowhere.
Current property I am in has 10 steps to front, 2 very steeps steps (over 18 inches each) and access through neighbours garden to back door but couldn’t get mobility scooter up doorstep into house so mobility scooter is as trapped in the house as I am
Banging my head against a brick wall trying to get moved and don’t know where to try next
In South Yorkshire. Any advice? CAB any help?

Hi @soulbanshee

As you suggest CAB may be able to help - If he visits here @MisterO maybe able to advise? And you can look at their website

So might adult social services
So might the stroke association helpline stroke helpline

Age UK to be another source if you are over 50

So who might different strokes helpline 0345 130 7172

There are probably support groups in your area with knowledge from a boots on the ground perspective. You might be able to find them via the stroke association and different strokes groups pages I put links in this post

Your local MP you should also be someone who can help you they certainly helped @KGB and he had similar problems just by being on the CC in emails he sent. The same would be true of local councillors and possibly your stroke consultants if there are any still involved in your recovery.

If you are that constrained then you should qualify for a blue badge. Quoting it’s reference number in your requests for support should show those allocating accommodation that you have recognised mobility needs.

I’m sure others will have suggestions above and beyond mine

Great thorough reply from @SimonInEdinburgh
If you don’t still have any consultants involved in your recovery your GP can also support you by writing to the local council.
Best of luck @soulbanshee

These things always turn out more difficult than they should be. Often councils don’t see you as a priority unless you are homeless.

Try a letter from your GP to support your request. If it was me I would also speak with Citizens Advice & your MP to see if they can help.

Good luck.

Had a letter from Sheffield Housing today refusing to upgrade me from General Needs D. Meaning I have to apply for 3rd floor (without lift) eg., that I wouldn’t be able to even access :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I might try him, I tried him about a decade ago and it took him six month for a non-committal reply, so I don’t hold out much hope
