Regaining full movement

I’m 6 months post strike. I regained movement in my left arm pretty quickly, I was able to drive after 3 weeks but at 3 months I suffered pain in shoulder, pretty sure it’s frozen shoulder and now my arm is getting weaker again.

My question is once you’ve regained movement, do you retain it or can you lose it again? I’m using the arm as much as possible but obviously the pain and stiffness is restrictive.

I’ve just replied to your comment on another thread but I got full movement back after my stroke then lost it again but it was a specific thing that caused me to get the frozen shoulder & it wasn’t stroke related.

Thank you. So, although you got full movement back after your stroke they don’t think you’ll get full movement back after frozen shoulder?

The physio said it was a possibility because although I got full movement back he thought the stroke would hamper my progress & that there was likely some residual weakness caused by the stroke. If I had to put a figure on it i would say i have about 90% range when i lift my arm in front of me. I can now get my arm behind my back again although find it a bit difficult to do my bra up still especially if I don’t get it first time. Lifting my arm to the side I probably only have 50% range back. It’s been about 18 months for me now & I’m still having physio & working hard at it between sessions.

Hi there

Yes, you will retain your movement ; you cannot lose it again. What you need to do is develop it a little. I mean work it ; look after the SITS muscles ; a resistance band to work the triceps ; some dumbbell weights for the biceps ; get a push down bar to work the thoracic muscles ; get some rubber fittings to work you fingers ; play the piano/guitar ; do some upper body PE ; stay on top of it ; if you leave it, it will definitely start aching and then keeping you awake at night. Be careful not to overwork it. Try Qigong, or somatics. Good luck, Roland

Thanks Roland. I have a set of exercises from the physio which I go through twice daily. I also signed up to the exercise program on here plus I have started yoga so I’m on top of it.

@Mrs5K good work with the physio. I hope you get some further improvement on the side lift. I’ve heard it can take a couple of years.
