Plain English please

I have been on this forum since last September when I had my stroke , I find it useful and sometimes humbling to read of other peoples experiences, but I have one major request, please when people’s experiences and events are reported, could you please use plain English, I for one don’t understand what is being described due to my lack of understanding medical terms,

Hello @Injebreck99 - I too have found posts that include things I don’t understand, but I guess this is understandable since there are so many different topics being discussed and lots of medical terminology being referred to.

Just as an example, initially, I even had to look up what a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack, often called a “mini-stroke”) was because although I am here because I am a carer for a stroke survivor, I hadn’t actually heard of TIA because my reference point was another type of stroke.

When I find something I don’t understand, I do one of two things

  1. Look it up on the internut
  2. Ask the poster - I think no poster would object to being asked to explain something. Even if the poster does not reply for whatever reason, someone else will almost certainly jump right in and explain.

It works for me

Also, I think sometimes, as stroke survivors some posters may have difficulty writing and/or reading - it can be quite energy sapping for some.
Then you also have predictive text which could add to the fun and games etc.

I hold my hands up - I am possibly guilty of not using plane English especially as I like to write chapter and verse when a simple yes/no would suffice

Here’s to plain English

@Injebreck99 i agree & if in the past I have said things that aren’t plain English I apologise & I will try to ensure I use plain English in future.

If there is something you want clarified then don’t be afraid to ask. I find when we use terms all the time we forget that not everyone will understand it.

I often look terms up on internet or sometimes I just scroll past especially if my stroke brain has had enough for the day.

Have a good weekend.

The other thing you have to remember is that many people are only typing one handed and therefore abbreviate a lot to reduce the amount they have to key in.

Secondly, many will be paraphasing/quoting what their doctors said or from their medical notes. They may not necessarily understand it all themselves.

Anything I don’t understand I usually google, but then I’m more able to do that now, but I know not everyone is as capable. If there is ever anything you want to query in my post, I’m more than happy to explain. I could then also be able to go back and edit the posts to simplify them further🙂
