Peripheral vision....again

Hi all hope all is well.
Recently posted about improvements in my left field of vision.
For example watching TV sited on wall in middle of room I can now see to both corners although LHS is not totally clear i can make things out.
When in supermarket or in car I can clearly see both sides of Isle and Kerb, pavement, Lampposts trees etc right up to the nearside door pillar. After waiting 6 months for a peripheral vision test from hospital I managed to get one done at my annual eye test yesterday. Guess what, they said no change I didn’t see any lights to left of centre.
Totally confused I’m 100% sure of my improvements. Anyone else had the same?
Take care.

You’ve said that you can see the TV on the left but it isn’t clear. I wonder if the lights yoy need to see affect the vision slightly differently and that means you can’t see them because your vision isn’t clear. looking at a little dot compared to a large TV screen probably requires different visual skills.

I’m just guessing as i know nothing about it but i can imagine you are extremely frustrated. It does sound like things may be improving so fingers crossed for more improvements & being able to pass the next test.

Best wishes

Ann

Hi, to be clear, I can see the whole screen of our large TV when looking at middle and half of the large mirror to the left of it. From there the rest of mirror and wall is blurred to the corner of the room. I think you are right, the closeness of the lights in the vision machine are only 30cm away from my eye. it’s beyond that I can see clear but I don’t think that is what they assess you on for driving. Soon after my stroke while looking at the TV I could only see the RH 2/3rds. Now I can see it all clearly, that’s partly of what I’m basing my recovery on.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Take care.

Four years coming up for me now. This year, as expected visit to optician, no improvement. Asked him is there any chance of my eyes improving ,and getting back to driving . He said if it was just reading a numberplate straight ahead of you , no problem. But my peripheral loss from both eyes on left, no improvement and that is it. Was told this right from start so bit bullet , accepted it will be very unlikely I’ll drive again. So reluctantly accepted this. I survived, have no physical disabilities so count my lucky stars and soldier on. Yet to hear of anyone on here with peripheral vision loss getting back to driving.

Hi, yeh both eyes but strangely I wasn’t aware of that until they told me it’s both many weeks after stroke. Hope you continue to improve.
Take care.

Sorry to hear that, I guess there is a cut off point where you see no improvement.
When I saw the consultant last week I explained how I thought my vision was improving and he said good, sounds like your brain is rebuilding. Fingers crossed.
When in hospital after my first test I was told loss is permanent but I think I’ve improved to the contrary.
Take care.

Any prognostication on what’s permanent and not in the case of brain injury is highly unlikely to be reliable and absolute.

The people on here who “should be dead”, will never walk again", will never speak again", will never…

Is long and proof of how training in communication is a missing component of frontline NHS and other organisations staff

Personally I ascribe to "As long as you make efforts you will see progress and the speed of progress (in physical things) likely accelerates.

All progress will still be at a pace that is slower than you would like But it builds day on day

Had the opposite, my vision seems to be worse but my field of vision has improved a lot according to the eye Clinic . So I guess it’s to do with signals from brain getting muddled. I have difficulty with making out dark and black objects and with distinguishing numbers clearly enough.

Hi Seeney
Now 14 years down the road from a small stroke which affected my left peripheral visual field, not totally with some vision in the lower quadrant.
Like you I had become aware that there was an improvement and took the opportunity, when getting some new spectacles recently,to have a visual field test.
The result was no change.
I had missed quite a few lights in the left visual field.
I think ,that over time,I have become adapted ,through scanning the area of visual field loss, to compensate and do not trip or bump into things.
Like you ,I see a wider field at distance than close up.

Good luck on your journey

Hi, think its difficult anyway to see lights even without a stroke. lol.
I definitely don’t scan. I can see to the left although limited and yes its the near things I cant see clearly. Did you manage to drive again?
Take care.

After putting together a dossier of evidence to support an application to drive ,I was given a temporary provisional licence to be assessed at a Disabled Driving Centre.
The assessment was initially indoors on machines to test my reactions, ability to read a number plate at the required distance, then a few laps in a dual control led car on an off road circuit to demonstrate that I could drive safely, before a 30-40 minute drive on public roads with various speed limits including at 70 mph on a dual carriageway.
There was no pass or fail as the decision was ultimately made by the DVLA Medical Committee but the feedback from the Assessors was that I would have passed a driving test but they were looking for a higher standard and I was too cautious, driving below the speed limit rather than up to it.
Ultimately the DVLA decided not to give me my licence back.
I am now 77 ,live in London, with a senior citizen travel pass valid on bus, tube and train within M25 so not driving is no barrier to getting about.
I mostly don’t scan just occasionally to check a specific hazard like crossing a road.

Hi, really hope things improve for you and you get your wish.
Think I’m lucky compared to others have full colour vision. As I’ve said before I can see a lot more now to the left. If I stand at 90 deg to a door in a dark room I can see all the light around it coming in from the next room. Strange as I cant see things close up to the left.
Take care.
