Parentheses relief

I spent 8 hours in Norfolk &Norwich A&E on Thursdaydue to a severe onset of numbness and tingling in my left face/ mouth/neck areas, had blood tests, CT scan, ECG , nothing new found , so I was prescribed Amitriptyline to help with the numbness and tingling , I took one 10mg tablet that night and slept well.
However the next morning I felt dreadful, arms and legs felt like lead, I couldn’t get out of bed hardly, my head was swimming, so I stayed in bed until I felt better.
I have now been prescribed Pregabalin instead, 2x50mg a day, but I am now very wary of taking these as well.
What are other people’s experiences of these medications.?

Hi @Injebreck99

Trips to a&e are very common in the first year post stroke and always the right thing to do w/ new unexplained symptoms at any time. I went about for three times in the first year. I’ve only been once in the last year but I have been ! :frowning:

Also very common is " well we haven’t got a clue but here’s some extra meds"

Given that you had your neurological event on the 9th of September y’r body won’t yet have cleared up all the damage so the chemical balance is not yet established and so all sorts of odd symptoms are not unknown.

The Welcome post hints at CPSP which is a less common after effect that can arise in the months following - fingers crossed, firmly crossed, that it is not emerging for you - it can start with the sort of feelings you have experienced. Our local expert was Nigel but he left over dissatisfaction with curation :(. I can put you in touch with him

Medication for paresthesia (not amusingly parentheses  ) commonly fall into the realms of Gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica), Amitriptyline, nortriptyline, duloxetine (an antidepressants) & Anticonvulsants & anti epilepsy also Carbamazepine for trigeminal neuralgia ( facial nerve pain) - also B12, NSAI

Some of these proved to be very useful for a subset of people. They also can have no effect for others. it’s often the process of trial and error & combining.

They often take a while to work (stick with it) and a while to aclimatize to and equally long time to gradually reduce because stopping cold generally has negative effects.

There will be many here who can say more & have already. So its definitely worth your using the magnifying glass to find the posts that have already been contributed

My fingers are crossed for you that it is just one of those things that will pass and in a year’s time you won’t even remember

@Injebreck99 sorry to hear of your new symptoms. Glad they’ve not found a new stroke or anything else.

As Simon has already said those sorts of symptoms are possible after a stroke and can come on a while down the line.

Many people have tried pregablin with differing results. It can very much be trial and error with those sorts of meds and they may take a few weeks to start having an effect so you’ll need to try & persevere for a bit.

Hope things settle soon.
