Panic attacks

Currently 2 month post stroke feel coming on physically but lately started getting chest flutters bit of nausea and stiffening up when stressed or uncomfortable. Also alertness is sky high to point get jumpy at smallest bang. I’m assuming these could be panic attacks was close to going bk to a&e yesterday but blew over after 30 mins n calmed down, the over alertness constant tho and nausea feeling. Hoping nausea could be the abdominal work outs just started to strengthen core… any similar experiences or copping techniques appreciated

You should always get checked if you are worried.
Also we all I think assume any health concern is stroke related, but that is not neccesarily so.

I used to get jumpy at the slightest noise, but it just wore off after a while.

it’s a really difficult thing to understand at first.usually the anxiety comes on with no trigger. which causes the brain to panic.
and that triggers your fight or flight mode
I have suffered most of my life with this.
and the stroke only adds to the pressure.
I’m not qualified to advise you on your best
course of action.but can only say it will pass with time. I’m new on this site
but I’m sure you will find a lot of help from the kind members on here.i am having
counselling soon with talk works.
via the local NHS . I wish you all the best in your search. it’s not easy but try and stay
positive, don’t over think things.
and try to achieve a little tle goal every day.

Checked out where? A&e wait over 6 hours, and stroke consultants nowhere to be seen after discharge there really ought to be follow up appointments to see how getting on and ease your worries

Were you refered on to your local stroke team after discharge from hospital? If not then I would go to your gp and discuss this issue. I would do that any as all sorts of other ailments can cause this too, such as straining something internally whilst working on you core strengthening. Something you may not necessarily feel any physical pain from.

You can also ask your doc about the stroke team. They could just be late getting in touch with you due to being swamped.

yes, completely understandable post stroke ; but hey, it’s great you’ve identified this weakness… you can now take steps to strengthen your mind & body !

My advice would be “learning to breathe”… to improve the efficiency of your breathing. This will be an invaluable skill that will possibly even extend your life, and certainly tweak your overall health.

You could start with a very accessible book call “Breath” by James Nestor. This will serve as a good introduction to the subject, and may inspire you to look further. I have read it, but my breathing is called “Abdominal breathing” and is based on Qigong techniques. It’s the next step, but the James Nestor book is a good start.

@Nico1986 the oversensitivity to noise I can relate to. I get this all the time and I am 3 years on. It isn’t quite as bad as it used to be thankfully. I often jump at the slightest noise. I guess I have just got used to it over time.

Panic attacks are very common with stress. I used to get them a lot pre stroke usually when in a lot of pain. I used to consciously try & slow my breathing down which helped to reduce the affects of the panic attack. Mindfulness might help or just some general relaxation techniques.

If you haven’t had any follow ups after your stroke then I would definitely ask your GP to refer you to the stroke team.

Nausea could be caused by many things. Stress could be the cause but equally it could be meds. It is easy to assume everything is stroke related but it may not be.

I have a physio ot and psychologist coming, don’t think any of them can prescribe meds or check heart beats etc I spoke to my ot n she said will be now getting bit better physically other stuff might start to become more apparent u had not noticed before. Think was my first time in a busy restaurant that triggered it was weird feeling just hope it passes over with time enjoy my Sunday dinners out

Your OT could well be right. It should improve in time so be patient with & kind to yourself. Keep enjoying those Sunday dinners. Love a Sunday dinner :yum:
