Hi 
my name is Julieann and I had a stroke 2 days after my 60th birthday last December. Although I didn’t have a clue what was wrong when I got up from bed to use toilet and my left arm was not moving,being left handed (great) I thought I’d slept awkward so got back to bed and slept another 5hrs . Got up again! Nothing ,arm was hanging hmm I live alone so phoned my bestie for advice. She was at my house in record time .S he had to dress me because I was so confused . I live near the hospital so went to emergency where another 50 people were waiting, but once I’d told the receptionist what was wrong my feet didn’t touch the ground, I know the NHS is struggling but credit when due.

So glad you’re here to share your story with us. I mean that in the nicest possible way of course - of course it’s not nice that you’ve had a stroke, but it’s nice that you’re able to share with us the experience and also to be able to give credit to the NHS for the wonderful job they have done to get you here.

Hi & welcome @Julie60 to the community. How great that your Bestie arrived so quickly and got you sorted out. Good to hear that the NHS stepped up when needed as well. They do tend to prioritise based on suspected conditions in A&E although sometimes it doesn’t feel like it.

Like yourself I woke up one morning as usual. However it took me a while to get out of bed. After staggering to thee kitchen to make breakfast I fell over. Not deterred I staggered to the bathroom, but again fell over. I spent the next seven hours shuffling on the floor until I reached the front door. I managed to open it and clung on to the wall. Fortunately my neighbour saw me and asked if I was ok. I knew something was definitely not right, but didn’t understand what had happened. Soon the ambulance arrived to take me to hospital, which was only 2 minutes away. The next day I told doctors , occupational therapists and nurses i would soon be back to normal - walking and in the gym. it took me around 3 months , but I’m now back to normal after a TIA. I’m grateful for the NHS as anyone else is in this situation. 2 years on I’m thankful for every day.
