You will get there. Just be patient. It takes time to recover from a stroke.
I am doing ok thanks. My walking could be loads better but over 3 years on I have accepted that it’ll never be the same. I use a mobility scooter if I need to go anywhere other than a very short distance.
Hi Anne.
I have always said it’s either shankses pony I will be using or nothing.
My dad keeps saying about a mobile scooter but they are right hand operation anyway so.
Glad you’re okay
Don’t dismiss the scooter. I did that for years because I thought it would make me lazy and not walk. All that did was make me miserable because I couldn’t go places my friends did, or go on holiday excursions. There is room to use a scooter AND walk. Also, scooter controls can be moved to the left hand side (I wouldn’t have bought one otherwise)
I was the same initially. If I couldn’t walk it I didn’t do it. But after 3 years of not being able to do what I needed to I got the scooter.
I was fed up of being left behind or not being able to get involved. As @MinnieB says there is a place for a scooter & walking. It has given me some of my independence back.
Ok love thanks for the advice.
My dad has 2.
1 is in his car and the tank that even has a number plate so it can go on the road.
I would just feel like a failure.
I went walking today to find ways to put more weight on my bad leg than my stick and I found 1.
When I got up this morning my good hip was hurting and when my hand spasmed instead of going straight they clenched glad physio is coming Monday.
Am still doing my exercises.
But being careful when it comes to my knee.
I just feel like I must be doing good because I’m getting pains on my good side
Hi Anne had community physio Monday and he was so defeatist.
Said I wouldn’t be able to use my hand again for starter’s
He was going to come in 2 weeks, once a week for a month and if nothing improved he was going to stop
Oh that is such a shame he was like that. But take that to spur you on & prove him wrong. I remember a stroke consultant saying to me that after a stroke you never get back to where you were. Before I left the consultation room i turned my disappointment at that news to one of determination to get as close to 100% recovered as I could.
I am not there yet but am still working at it.
Use the time you have him for to prove that he is wrong. Many people on here have been told similar & have made great progress.
I called his home base and complained another physio is coming to see me next Thursday.
I went walking today and walking to car park wasn’t bad but on the way back I got to a hump caused by a tree root which I had gone over on the way down buy when I tried to go over it my foot tried turning sideways in my splint and my toes went under.
Took me forever to sort it.
Well done on your walking & getting over the tree hump. The main thing is you did it even if it took a while. Each and every time you do things like that it is teaching your brain that little bit more.
Have just tried a new exercise.
Put bad hand grabbing grab rail of bed then trying to push up while leaning forward so my arm bends hopefully to get stronger
I have a problem Anne.
I’ve been taking blood thinners since probably October and looks like they are not working anymore.
I keep getting cramp in the same spot I did when I had my stroke.
As soon as I stretch it in bed cramp happens.
I have Lansoprazole.
It’s about trying to get some good blood circulation back into your legs. The blood thinners are just part of the solution but they’ll never be enough alone.
Drink plenty of fluids each and every day, particularly water; avoid alcohol.
Don’t sit stationary for longer an hour without getting up and walking around.
Elevate the leg above the level of the heart periodically throughout the day.
Massage will also help, a hand held electric massager would help to loosen up tight muscles thus improving circulation.
This hip stretch I posted earlier will probably be beneficial to you for both for the stretch as well as reducing the swelling in your leg and aiding circulation in it too.
Hi Lorraine I drink water like a fish.
I don’t have anything to raise my legs.
I do my stretching and 1 leg stands and squats twice a day 20 x2 and have done for weeks.
I’m doing my own meals every day which includes standing for ages.
My new physio comes next Thursday so hope he will help me.
There are exercises I can’t do alone.
My but feels equal now.
@nerrad67 you’ve had some good advice from Lorraine. You need to try & keep moving. How do you know the blood thinners have stopped working? It is definitely worth speaking to your GP or if you can’t wait till Tuesday then call 111 for advice.
