My Personal collection of therapies

Hello wonderful folks,

I present my personal collection of 10 beloved tried and tested therapies, in order of importance and efficacy, that I have found helpful and beneficial during my stroke recovery.
These solutions call on traditional Western, Eastern, Holistic, Complementary and Alternative medicine, all backed by strong empirical data. I hope the list will inspire you to research or even try some new ideas. I have embraced the following:

  • Sunlight, UVB, Photo Biomodulation PBM
All animal and plant life rely on sunlight to survive. The UVB portion of sunlight helps us to produce vitamin D, which is essential for bone health, the immune system, and helps prevent chronic disease. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Near Infra-red light (NIR) improves mitochondrial function, thereby boosting ATP synthesis in the production of cellular energy. NIR and UVB panels give us access to specific frequencies, whist the full spectrum of balanced, natural sunlight, when exposed correctly, is the most powerful healing power we can access directly.
  • Endocannabinoid system, ECS
Our bodies come equipped with a complete endocannabinoid biological system, discovered in 1992, though not yet fully understood. This is a widespread regulatory system that plays a critical role in maintaining homeostasis, influencing processes like mood, appetite, pain, and memory. Through retrograde signalling its primary role is as a modulator of neurotransmission, regulating conventional neurotransmitters such as glutamate (excitatory) and GABA (inhibitory). THC Relieves muscle spasticity in conditions like stroke and spinal cord injuries.
  • Wheatgrass juice
Wheatgrass juice is a nutrient rich superfood containing Vitamins A, B, C, E, K, minerals Iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and zinc, and enzymes superoxide dismutase and cytochrome oxidase. It also contains chlorophyll, which has detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties. The structure of haemoglobin (based on Iron) and chlorophyll (based on Magnesium) are strikingly similar, though the scientific community rejects a connection between the two while fans and proponents claim we can convert chlorophyll to haemoglobin.
  • Nutrition, Supplements, Vitamins
Good nutrition is foundational to maintaining overall health and well-being. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients fuels your body, supports bodily functions, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. A nutrient-rich diet boosts your body’s ability to fight infections and recover faster from illnesses. Obtaining nutrients from bioavailable food sources is better compared to synthetic supplements, and more easily absorbed by the body. Additionally, food provides a complex matrix of nutrients that work synergistically, enhancing absorption and effectiveness.
  • Qigong, Acupuncture, TCM
Traditional Chinese Medicine is an ancient system of medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years. It is rooted in the concept of balance and harmony within the body and the external environment. It includes herbal medicine, acupuncture, diet, massage (Tui Na), reflexology, and exercises like Qi Gong. Qi or Chi is the life force or energy that flows through the body through pathways called meridians. Blockages in Qi can lead to illness. TCM treats the root cause of such illness, promoting maintenance and prevention through a holistic approach.
  • CORE exercises, Walking, Treadmill
Developing a strong core is essential for stability, posture, balance, and overall functional movement. Exercising increases our demand for energy, generated through aerobic, and anaerobic cellular respiration. This biological process is how your body converts nutrients into energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which powers muscular activity and other cellular functions during exercise. There are 3 main stages to this; Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and the Electron Transport Chain ETC, which take place in our mitochondria.
  • Grounding & Earthing
Grounding (or earthing) is the practice of connecting your body directly to the Earth’s surface, which has a negative electric charge. The idea is that the Earth can transfer free electrons into your body, which can have various health benefits. This can be done through direct skin contact with the ground or using electrical grounding devices that reproduce this effect. Earthing can improve blood flow, leading to better oxygenation of tissues and overall circulation. This, in turn, helps relieve pain, improve sleep, and boost the immune system by reducing inflammation.
  • Massage & Fascia
Fascia is a connective tissue that surrounds and supports the body. Containing 6 times more nerves and receptors than our muscles, it has been called our primary sensory organ. Tight or restricted fascia can limit the range of motion in joints and muscles. Regular massage can stimulate elasticity, maintaining the fascia’s ability to stretch and rebound. Myofascial release can break up the adhesions which become stiff and sticky, by applying pressure and stretching techniques to loosen fibres and release tightness that accumulates in the muscle-tendon-fascia unit.
  • Essential Oils
Trees and plants were placed on this Earth long before man arrived, to heal and support us. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts obtained through methods such as cold pressing. These oils capture the natural fragrance and therapeutic properties of plants, and have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal purposes. Essential oils are a versatile and powerful natural tool used in a variety of health and wellness applications. Used to promote relaxation, support immune function, improve skin health, or enhance mood.
  • Raw Honey
Honey has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal, and therapeutic properties plus numerous health benefits. Modern research continues to validate its effectiveness in treating various health conditions. Antimicrobial and Antifungal Effects: Bacterial and Fungal Infections: Honey has broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties that help fight infections caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Studies have shown that honey can be effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Honey is rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids and phenolic acids.

I plan to cover a summary of the remaining therapies, some of which I have not yet tried. Feedback and experiences welcome, happy Sunday, Ciao, Roland

This is a quite wonderful list

Would you consider a few extensions ?

Perhaps you’d add

  • How it helps & timescales
  • What a helpful regime is EG once a month or an hour a day
  • What is needed in expertise and or equipment &| space &| support |& … and costs
  • the prerequisite readiness conditions or exclusions
  • Any YouTubers & website of note, support agencies/ Orgs, controversies etc

That sort of guidance might start it being a jumping off point for those looking for answers to there current challenges.

I’m willing to help
This is the sort of thing that we’d see sig doing in community  ?

Thank you, Simon

The above list comes from the appendix of my stroke book. I have lived these therapies… for years in some cases (wheatgrass was introduced to me on a detox course in Ludlow back in 2011.) I remember calling this my “Alien abduction” week, at the time! A packet of Wheatgrass sprouting seeds from Natures Root £6.99 and we grow our own ; you can see them almost ready in our kitchen in the photo below.

Costs are all over the place ; sunlight is free, (unless you want some in December, in which case a fortnight in Mauritius could cost £4,000) but my NIR panel costs £350 and my UVB panel from USA was £800 with tax. I have been grounding for less than a week, prompted by my massage practitioner, but already I think it’s marvelous! My grounding mat was £26. I now have 2, and a couple of optional testing devices (£20 each) to make sure it is electrically grounded. Exercising is free, but my treadmill cost almost £2,000. A decent collection of Essential oils is expensive ; think £500 - £2,500, but a bottle of DoTerra Lemon is £10… these are highest quality cold pressed oils. You can follow along some Qigong exercises on YouTube for free. Like all these things, you can spend a lot, or very little on a budget. Likewise you can do Qigong for 20’ a week, or meditate 30 minutes each day, like I do. Eating a spoon of raw honey takes me 15"? Grounding mat, maybe 20’ to be effective? Dr. Mercola spends about 8 hours a day grounded.

I’m already researching my next anomaly ; I don’t even know what it’s called, but my name for it is “Electrical field hesitation” theory to do with nerves. When my affected finger goes for a key on the keyboard it swerves off course and hits an adjacent key at the last second. Bizarre !

Do use, add, collaborate, speculate on my list. I have given it to the community, and hope someone can benefit. It is a fascinating topic to research, though I’m aware not every therapy will appeal to every person… I never hit it off with homeopathy, nor my wife. I’m not sure why it’s on my list.

Anyway thanks for reading, ciao, Roland

@pando thanks for sharing. There’s a lot to take in there but i’m sure the community will find some of it useful. As you say some things won’t suit some but others it will.

Have a good week.
