Thinking of getting a mobility scooter, how do others manage with only use of right hand?
I haven’t tried a scooter. I have a powered wheelchair with riggt hand controls.
I have use of both arms but I would highly recommend a mobility scooter. It opens up a whole new world of independence.
Test drive a couple. I think you can even get them to come to your home for you to try them. Find one with the controls on 1 side - one i used had the forward & reverse on same button. @Bobbi has recently purchased a scooter & has limited use of his arm. I am sure he’ll be along soon to offer you some useful info.
Best wishes
Ann
Hi, I only have the use of my right side and I use a basic Luggie mobility scooter and operate it with my right hand.
My only issue is that I have no sensation on my left side and sometimes feel that I am slipping off of the seat. Overall I would highly recommend the Luggie and we have used it to travel abroad on many occasions.
As Ann said test drive a couple and see how you feel. Good luck with your search, I’m sure there’s one out there suitable for you.
Regards Sue
I started my mobility journey, right side paralysed and unable to walk or stand.
The nurses were fed up with me always ringing my bell. First to get help from bed to commode, then from commode to chair. yet again from chair to wheel chair and then back onto the bed. Only to begin the whole cycle yet again.
I was fed up with the waiting I was having to do.
So, motivated by my discomfort, I chatted up a physio who, with a few quick lessons, showed me how to performs a ‘transfer’.
What a game changer !!
I was told off by nurses but could self propel my wheel chair using my working foot. I could hop in and out of bed, jump on the commode and have a satisfying dump and scoot off to sit at table at meal times. I got the long suffering nurses to position a table and meal times became a social occasion with a few of us guys sat around it.
I went home unable to walk, but began to pick up on that, getting a rollator which increased my mobility and range within the house.
My right hand struggled with the handle bars, but over time there was a little improvement.
Right now my right arm is giving me grief, is painful, and my right hand is only working a bit, but working enough to control the lever that controls speed.
As your right hand works okay you should have no trouble controlling a scooter but I suggest visiting a mobility show room and have a trial run. Take special care over finding out about the different models and what they have to offer.
Also don’t rush at buying one, I have heard a number of stories where people have paid for something they ended up not happy with.
These can be quite expensive devices and I believe there is a second hand market, reconditioned also.
A scooter is a game changer. Mine suits me but might not be for everyone.
The mobility you can gain is a true life enhancer.
Happy trails.
keep on keepin’ on
I’ve got an efoldi Lite. I mostly use it for holidays, as it folds up really small. I can only use my left hand, so had the control moved to the left hand side. I have tried (in the past) going on holiday without a scooter, but you miss so much by not being able to walk very far. I was concerned at first, that it might make me lazy and unwilling to walk, but that hasn’t been the case.
That’s sounds very similar to me. I went away & having the scooter meant I was able to see & do so much more. It also helped those with me as they didn’t feel like they would need to stop with me or walk at my slower than snail like pace. It was a win win all round.
Well done Bobbi

hi Janet please do all the research you can
or preferably someone who knows what they are talking about I am lucky that I understand mechanical stuff.buy a mobility scooter or whatever is not to be rushed into they are a VERY expensive mistake if you choose badly. you need to consider exactly what you require it to do.the issues are .
power output.
level of gradient.hills
distances you expect to travel
condition of the pavements and areas you are intending to go on . do you wish to get
on a bus with it. etc . as you can see it is not
easy, I have a supplier coming to my house to test drive the one I think I need. which is a really good way to do it if you can .
good luck, don’t get done for speeding though.
