Mental acquity

Does anyone else have people around them treat them like they are stupid.I can’t walk or talk.I use this iPad as an AAC communication device, but I’m often treated in this care home as if I Don’t know what’s right for me,others making decisions for me and not heeding my wishes.two things have happened recently. My SALT said I could have yoghurt but the carers at the care home said I could not and that I was lactose intolerant this was news to me!
At the rehab hospital I Was at I was put on a tilt- table and easy-chair to stand.I found out from another resident that the care home has a standing machine too,but I’m told I can’t use it until I see an orthopaedic surgeon in September
.meanwhile my rehab goes backward❣️ 🜁

I just never got on with my care package.
They had their way of doing things.
That was fine by me but I just preferred not to be there while they did.

Their visits were sudden, noisy, intrusive, and felt like some sort of raid.

My wife and I were obviously not up to the job and needed to be put in our place. After we had been corrected they marched out with much slamming of doors. Another job well done.

Obviously one needs to be told. One must not contradict. One must learn to be submissive, compliant and unquestioning.

I’m sure the system would completely collapse if it wasn’t for the likes of these caring, committed and commanding professionals.

In fact get rid of the troublesome folk who have experienced stroke and hey presto, problem solved !!

I’m not one for revolution, though. It is messy.

I don’t find they treat me as if i am stipud but they do like to decide whst I can & can’t do sometimes. An example waz when my mum broke her hip & my sister said i’ll look after her because you can’t do it.

I think people are often well meaning (maybe not all the professionals ) but just don’t realise how important it is to us to try thjngs.

@Mich-mm my mother was one! Raising her volume when talking to me, asking me questions like I’m a child, slowed down with one syllable words.

I said, several times, “Im alright to understand your questions without this paraphernalia - it’s quite offensive”. Still she’s tried for months until it calmed down.

Parents eh?!

Why don’t you let them read this post then.
If this doesn’t get the message home to them, then clearly a refresher course or further training is reqired, in caring for stroke survivors and how to communicate with them appropriately.

In saying all that I have to say I’ve never experienced this myself, from anyone, not even at my worst when I couldnt speak.

So as I said I Use this iPad as an AaC some people type on it too as if I’m deafbizarre!so I ask a question typing on the iPad which ‘speaks’ what I Type and they bend over me to answer my question by typing to me on the iPad,oh my people are strange making snap judgements without having the facts!

That is definitely bizarre!

I still say you should let those key workers read your post on here just this one, or at least the care home manager. It would clearly demonstrate just how cognisant your are, niether deaf, docile nor stupid, and perfectly capable of holding up a coversation on here.

As for them speaking to you via the AAC , don’t let them. Take it back when they try and just demand they speak to you with using their voice. Just point to them and hand signal them to speak…which is opening and closing your fingers against your thumb.

If you want to get the message across that you want to treated as an adult, not a child, these are sure ways of getting that message across.

I think half their trouble might be with you being none verbal, they haven’t been able to establish just how fully cognisant you are perhaps?

I haven’t noticed people belittling me in this way but I have been gaslighted after stroke and it’s grim.

Gaslighting I’m not hip and trendy enough to use that term @Rups,but yes that describes what they do perfectly❣️ 🜁
