Mathsmatical puzzle

Hello,

Just saw this on the internut and thought, hey heck, why not?

This post is meant to give your brain a work out if you so wish.
You are not obliged to read it and you are not obliged to take part.
It’s totally your choice.

If you decide to read it and take part, you may find it makes our brain hurt or you may find it stimulates your brain.

Brian on the other hand just had some boxes and paper clips

It’s a number puzzle and it was allegedly set as homework for seven year olds! It goes something like this…

Stretch Your Thinking.

  • Brian has some boxes of paper clips (it could only be Brian!).
  • Some boxes hold 10 clips and some boxes hold 100.
  • He has some paper clips left over.
  • He has three more boxes with 100 paper clips than he has boxes with 10 paper clips.
  • He has two fewer paper clips left over than he has boxes with 100 paper clips.

What number of paper clips could Mr. Brian have?"

Now, feel free to make any assumptions you need to in order to come up with the answer.

Far too many in this paperless age.

523?? (He can always use them as stitch markers for his knitting…u can tell I can’t sleep tonight!!)

5boxes of 100 =500

2boxes of 10= 20

Minus 2 from 5 = 3

feel free to correct ma rubbish logic

I wouldn’t mind being a seven year old

I would! Everyone tells you what to do, what to eat, how to think. And they take your paper clips away!

Not enough information

Let no of boxes of 100 =C

Let no of boxes of 10=X

The only information we have is that C-X = 3

The number of leftover clips makes no odds to the result.

Where it said in the last bit, feel free to make any assumptions you want in order to come up with the answer this is what I did to work it through. I am still none the wiser and returned to this post to find out the answer ha ha ha….OR…..is my confusion cos I am not seven years old although I feel we might have to explain to them what a paper clip is!!!

So it says how many could he have. That suggest there may be multiple answers.

I worked out the answer in the same way as @Susie1 and came up with 523 as well.

@ManjiB 301,402,523,634,745, 856,967,1078 or 1189,but I agree with others the riddle doesn’t provide enough info, like which boxes the extra paperclips came from!
