Losing your taste buds

Hi all, has anyone experienced losing their sense of taste? My partner can only taste sweet or foods with chilli, everything else tastes very bland. Is this a normal side effect of the stroke? Can anything be done to help with it?

Thank you!

Have you tried the same procedure those took after Covid?

I lost my smell and taste for months and used to smell lemons, ginger, peppermint etc to retrain smell and taste.

Maybe the same could help here.

Took a long tome but came back.

Early days I suddenly couldn’t drink coffee, I found all sorts of ‘favourite foods’ suddenly tasted foul. I was in hospital and had caught Norovirus. It could have been why I went through this or it might have been the stroke.
I took to eating ice cream, jelly or a piece of fruit and drinking chocolate, all a bit weird but the stroke experience was a total removal from my ‘normal’ habits.

I have settled into a life with peculiarities an everyday occurrence. Nothing strange about that and I enjoy my life having come to terms with this strange new world.

I know I’m not alone with these experiences and that life can be enjoyable with a sense of purpose, a direction and occasionally some successes.

Try not to obsess about symptoms, look at the bigger picture, share your experiences and begin to find your way about. You had a stroke.

keep on keepin’ on

Your post is very timely.

My husband hated hospital food for the 3 months he was in. He said it all tasted the same, horrible.

He came home in Feb and ate my cooking really well but the last week or so he has really lost his appetite again. An odd meal he says he enjoyed but his portion size has gone right down and he never really fancies anything.

@Ash16 my taste buds played up after my stroke & I found some things tasted vile for a while after. I have also found that aome things I loved before I can no longer eat and some things I tolerated before I now love. Ftom time to time I still get the vile taste back again but it doesn’t last too long now. Keep eating and hopefully your tastebuds will return to normal.

@Trisha2 i lost my appetite after my stroke and never got the feeling of being hungry. As a result I have lost over 4 stone in weight. My advice, easier said than done I know, is to try & get him to keep eating ao he doesn’t lose too much weight. If necessary fortify his food so even if he only eats a little itis full of calories e.g. butter, cheese & milk in mashed potato & scrambled egg, marvel milk powder stirred into yoghurts, make up fruit smoothies with some cream in them. That type of think. You could also look at supplement drinka like Ensure, Complan etc to provide him nutrients & calories.

My tastebuds range from 50 - 75%, as does my smell. Normal? I guess but it is a silent symptom and sucks.
