How your brain needs to prepare and make space to accept new thoughts and ideas contained in the form of music. Music is a language and contains expressive concepts, but if we are busy and lead a cluttered life, there’s no way for us to let it in. I call that listening without hearing. I’m guilty of that. When I was 50 I decided to learn Sibelius’s 6th Symphony ; well now I think I had to listen to Vanska’s recording of it 20-30 times before I could find my way around. That’s because I knew nothing about Alpha mode, which is the key to all creativity and healing. If you learn to enter this mode, your life will change and you will start to love everything, not just music. Good luck, and give it a year; if you embark on this journey with all your might, I think it is possible to reach alpha in a year, especially if you embrace Earthing. Without Earthing it will be very hard. Once you go into Alpha your brain will have the fresh thoughts of a teenager. Good luck, kid !
Very interesting Roland. I think I am often guilty of listening without hearing. I shall have to try the alpha mode and see how I get on. It’ll take practice like you said.
Yes, I should have warned viewers it’s actually very hard ; Joe Dispenza noted that 4 students sustained 15 seconds of Alpha (via EEG) during a recent course he held ; this was after a lot of training. I estimate I am in Alpha (surpassing reading focus as an indicator) for 1-2 hours. but It takes me approx 1 hour to reach Alpha mode.
Anyway, that’s what is possible, and the rewards are huge ; it’s the ideal healing state !
Thank you for sharing @pando – a very interesting read.
The power of mind and music is indisputable.
Cheers to the Muse !! :
keep on keepin on

Although I don’t think I have achieved Beta levels when listening to music, I do know that music has become an integral part of my post stroke rehabilitation. My ear tends to attune more to lyrics but have found much benefit in instrumental jazz and classics. Yesterday, I started my day with Bolero, and used it to continue a walk to the shops, it got me there. After stroke, I discovered a whole genre I had never explored before called drone and drift. Drone and drift is now all I listen to when I sleep and have done now for almost six years. I have also come to enjoy ambient Arabic music but my true love is for songs of the troubadours and the crusades along with other ancient music. Many of the composers you mention, I recognise, but strangely I couldn’t name a piece yet I have listened to their compositions for years, even as a child. Stranger still, I have listened to, as an example, something like Handel’s Water Music probably hundreds of times but ask me what piece resonates with me most, I couldn’t name it.
Back to where my skill set lies, you can use either taste or tastes in the context of what you were saying. I noticed you deliberated slightly. The meaning is slightly different whether using the singular or plural but it amounts to basically the same thing.
Any adult is by default in beta, especially if you attune to lyrics ; you might mean alpha, which is a more receptive, dreamy, closer to sleep state ? Alpha state is also ideal for rest, digest and repair. Alas, most adults will never get there by accident, although we pass through Alpha on our way to sleep (theta)
Indeed, it was Alpha I was referring to. Don’t think I’ve ever reached that state.
Can’t say I know which mode I listen in or indeed if I am listening (hearing without listening) but music has been a part of my life for many years. I listen all the time, used to be mostly radio or CDs, tapes and before that LPs, but these days it’s YouTube though I am beginning to switch off due to the horrible adverts that keep interrupting the music.
In the words of the song, “Music was my first love and it will be my last, music of the future and music of the past”
Me, I’m a prog rock gal!!! (always has to be one eh)
Nothing wrong with prog rock. I love music full stop and so that includes prog rock.
That said, my understanding of the genres might not always be correct.
What if I was to say this is one of my favourite “prog rock” tunes?
Defo!! 21st Century schozoid Man…cannae beat it. In the Court of the Crimson King one of the first albums I ever bought in the 70s…I had a maxi coat and long hair…we were called “hairies” (and then punk came to town) ahhh reminiscing LOL
More recently tho, launched myself into a study of West Coast Jazz - Art Pepper, Chet Baker, Dave Brubeck et al, following being influenced by Detective Harry Bosch (Michael Connelly books and tv series) feel lost out not listening to this earlier in my life
Copy you ; remember when you were a teenager and learnt all the lyrics to every song you ever loved ? that was alpha mode. We can get there if we work at it !!
I’m a long time prog rocker, too. Mainly Yes, ELP, Procul Harum, and Jethro Tulll.
I was introduced to prog rock bands like King Crimson and Hawkwind through a childhood school pal, good times.
Jethro Tull’s Aqualung also comes to mind …
(trivia time = = Ian Anderson’s daughter is married to Andrew Lincoln actor (aka Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead) so there ya go
