Lansoprazole - alert/information

For anyone using PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) Lansoprazole, it seems there is an NHS health alert which you can read here.

PPI Lansprazole long term usage alert

It is only an alert and you should read it and consider its relevance to your personal circumstances and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you require clarification.

Thanks ManjiB
Im on Lansoprazole - my wife was too and that was when less was known we learned & i think it’s important not to take on an empty stomach and I always have mine when I’m having breakfast but does anyone know better?
It seems it can be harsh on the tummy long term. I am not sure if it’s actually doing (me) any good - sometime i will ask my GP about trying without and see how that goes. I understand why ive been prescribed it though doubtful it is needed.. we are not all the same!

I was told it was supposed to be taken half an hour before clopidogrel the blood thinner. I have been on it for years. This alert has made having a doctor’s review of medication you suggested my important. I don’t feel adverse effects but I had my stroke in 2017 and have faithfully followed the advice of the hospital

I’VE I’ve been put on this while in hospital to treat the sometimes crippling heartburn caused by my a hiatal hernia, previously I was on Omeprazole - also a PPI, not sure what te difference between them is. I’m not currently taking Lansoprazole because mylocal pharmacy had run out.

Personally i don’t think it’s good to be taking proton-pump inhibitors long-term anyway. They increase Dementia risk - an additional risk stroke survivors don’t need!

Hello Baldrik.

I was take to take it up to half an hour before food. I then I have my breakfast and take my clopidogrel. I can’t understand our Indian pharmacist. I don’t know if GPs have time. to give you appointments. I rang 111 for my husband yesterday and got rung by a doctor. In the New Year I might try it.

I was changed to this type but the dispersible 30mg when I had my stroke. I was on Omeprazole 20mg twice a day for years without any side effects.

Lansoprazolae I have to take 30 to 60 mins before food and in the morning. And take no other indigestion medication 2 hours before. But that was the same when on the Omeprazole.

Now do I need to take them. Yes if I don’t take i suffer really bad reflux. And to be honest from starting the Lansoprazolae I’ve had very little reflux.

Like all medication they can have side effects but so far nothing. And nothing with all the other medicine I’m having to take to keep me going.

Interesting- it obviously works for you. I’ve never had reflux (my wife did) so I’d like to try without but that needs discussion. Maybe pharmacist would be a good person to start with and then GP
Thanks Mate👍

I plucked up the courage to ring the doctor’s as I am scared of receptionists only to be told to ring in the morning as they operate a triage system!
