Hi there, I need an advice. I closed my PFO in February and my cardiologist said it’s completely normal to have do lots of things including a MRI if I need one. I have been postponing an MRI I need for my back until after I do the echo bubble cardiogram to see if the PFO has been closed but the issue is that my back hurts and we need to see what’s going on. It’s been over four months now. What has been your experience? Did you have an MRI after the PFO procedure and everything was ok?
I know what an MRI is, but what’s a PFO?
A hole in the heart or patent foramen ovale. About thirty percent of the population has one but most likely don’t know about it, it is considered benign but in rare cases it can send blood clots up into the brain as opposed to the lungs if there is an irregular shunt of the heart. At least that is my understanding of it. I had a bubble study and they didn’t find a PFO but it was one of the things they checked for while they were determining the cause of my strokes. I imagine an MRI would be possible after having a PFO closed, better to check, but most surgery these days is designed to be MRI friendly.
I had one of those diagnosed after my stroke. I just wasn’t familiar with the acronym. Thanks for the explanation. “Nothing to be done about it” was the verdict.
