Holiday and car Insurance

I have just had my final consultation with my neuropathist. All tests came back negative so the conclusion from the consultant was on the balance of probabilities that I have had a stroke. This was for an incident that took place 6 months ago. He has given me a letter to whom it may concern saying he has no problems with me driving.

I now wonder what I need to do in order to get my Insurance in order. Both Holiday, Life and Driving. What has been the experience of other people once the diagnosis has come through.

Thanks.

Hi @Harry09 & welcome to the community. Insurance companies vary but I found when I contacted my car insurance company that they didn’t want to know as long as DVLA hadn’t imposed any restrictions. Other companies do want to know. I would notify them and at least they are aware & can’t argue it in the event of a claim.

You should be able to get holiday insurance but you must declare your stroke. I have many conditions to declare and it costs me more but have always been able to get insurance. Use someone like medical travel compared to get some quotes.

Life insurance is, i believe, a lot more tricky. Many people seem to have difficulty getting a policy. I haven’t tried so not able to advise.

Hope you are doing ok.

Best wishes

I couldn’t get holiday insurance for a UK break so got my daughter to book instead as we’re going together.
Car insurance I had to pay an admin fee online to let them know but my premium is unchanged as I’ve notified DVLA and have no restrictions.
For life insurance premiums may be affected if you take out new policies but existing ones may not change.

Thanks Alfie, I’m fairly sure getting your daughter to book it was useless for you. They wouldn’t have covered you in the event of a claim. Thanks though.

At least my daughter can still go if I can’t. If I’d booked in my name and not travelled then she couldn’t go with the booking in my name. It’s not perfect but money won’t be wasted this way even if I have to miss out.

Ah, I see what you mean

Driving insurance - It didnt effect it as I had no DLVA restrictions
Holiday - The first year (less than a year after my stroke) was £250 for 2 weeks in florida. The next year (1+ year after) dropped to £60 for 2 weeks in Florida. (yes we really like Disney)
Life - Ive struggled with this so far and found it more difficult to get (which I havnt yet )

Hi @Harry09

Welcome to the community, I’m sorry to hear about your stroke. I hope you’ve found the answers helpful that you’ve received so far. I can see that there may be some difficulty with the life insurance, I would suggest giving our Stroke Support Helpline:0303 3033 100 a call as they may be able to point you in the right direction for companies that specialise with health conditions.
