Hi everyone, hope your all doing well. I’ve been on the clopidrogrel/atorvastatin combo since the middle of April. Has anyone else experienced a bit of hair loss while taking these tablets? Laura from Glasgow
Hello Laura - Hope you are well.
It seems that the atorvastatin has a [rare] side effect which can cause hair loss. There is a term for it - alopecia.
This will likely be temporary and may resolve once medication is discontinued.
I wonder if you have the manufactures leaflet that comes with this medication. If you have it, look under the side effects and this will likely be mentioned there.
Of course there are many causes for hair loss including stress.
My Mum lost a lot her hair during a period when she was under tremendous stress because of the way she was being cared for by agency care workers. The carers were so rough with her during the care sessions s that she became frightened and used to stress out each time they came (four times a day). She would curl up into a ball to protect herself and she would break out into a sweat with her head soaked in sweat by the end of the care session which thankfully the carers finished in 15 minutes (half the allotted time).
She remains partially bald as the hair has not yet recovered. Needless to say we had to dismiss the agency PDQ.

I do have a lot of hair loss but never put it down to my meds. J just assumed it was because I was a woman of a certain age and was menopausal - which can also cause hairloss.
I might have to look into that further.
@Laura95
No hair loss but the combination of those two meds is dreadful. I was on 80mg Astorvastatin and I had a few side effects, I now have 10mg rosuvastatin and the difference is quite unbelievable. However as we are all individuals maybe 80mg works for some people but not for me. Good luck ![]()
I was given Apixaban and have lost tons of hair. It started within 2 weeks of taking two a day. I know it was the medication due the way it happened.
It has not grown back and is still happening to varying degrees every time I wash my hair.
As a woman. I really wish that was told about this devstating, life changing, side effect and been given an alternative medication.
Hello @ClareHind - welcome to the community.
I am afraid I cannot think of anything to say that might help you accept what has happened, but wish you all the best.

Hi @ClareHind and welcome to the community. Hair loss can be quite distressing - I know I found it difficult to deal with initially.
I wonder whether you could get your meds reviewed. There might be an alternative that doesn’t cause the same issue.
Best wishes
Ann
@ClareHind Have you not been offered a wig? Or are you in a financial position to get one made for yourself? Every woman on this forum will feel your pain as our hair is everything to us as woman. Good luck moving forward ![]()
