I had my stoke in 2017 but am still disabled by it. I had physio but the therapist arranged for me to have a blue badge. I have recently started using a walker. I stopped doing the exercises but do the one of standing on my tiptoes. There is one where I walk in a straight line but I loose my balance. I have seen posts where people say they they have improved by doing exercises. I wonder if I should start again. The physio gave me walking aids but another therapist seemed less impressed
I really think you should! I attend a strength and balance class with Age UK…the key is in the name. You can’t have good balance without a certain amount of muscular strength. As leg muscles get stronger balance improves. Even if you have an issue like vertigo or crystals in the ear, your imbalance will be more controllable.
I’m in the gym just now, there are both old and young here, many recovering illnesses and major incapacities, all working together back some of what they lost. And now I need to get back to it before I cool down too much.![]()

I agree with @EmeraldEyes. You should try your exercises again they will help improve your balance for sure.
Yes, you should definitely continue with your exercises. Your brain needs to learn(relearn) what is expected of it so by doing exercises you’re teaching your brain to control your body.
We all get fed up of doing exercises I had a shoulder rotor issue and was given the exercises by the physio. After a couple of weeks I thought what’s the point. Nothing changed. But I continued for a few more weeks and yes it got a lot easier. Still feel it at times but know where near as painful. And I still do them. But. Not everyday. So yes keep doing them.
Thanks everyone. My niece is a physio. She is visiting us this month. She may be able to look at the exercises I was given and add muscle strengthening ones.
Your proprio receptors (balance sensors) are lazy and will never wake up if you do not challenge them. This is true for everyone.
Thankyou @pando i will look up proprio receptiors and get on with the exercises. I think I am lazy too!
@jenny-wren Try again. My GP happy I used a cane, my chiropractor was not impressed. Its hard but we need to keep trying. NHS happy we give up as its more trips to them for medication etc. Keep going
Have an amazing day ![]()
Thank you. I have done it today, Will try again tomorrow. I have been on the phone to the doctors but didn’t get through. I will try tomorrow. it’s about something different. What’s a chiropractor?
welcome - this tip is tried and tested for 3 years. My Radiologist friend alerted me to it
A chiropractor can help with all issues of the spine and nervous system. It is private, but to me it was money well spent as I struggled walking, now I can. My Chiropractor had full faith that I would walk and exercise again, I thought no way, but here i am getting there.
There’s guy in instagram/yourube/FB - doctor Wayne something who does neurology exercises. Very good. You shoals as much as you can - even if it’s short walks - not walking is worse ![]()
Thanks @scottishMagic I have found loads on line. The thing to do is to act . Walk and keep practising.
My niece is sending me something called the Otago program. I am watching a video on it
Yoga, osteopathy, neurological exercises
