Foot Drop footwear

Hi Everyone, just looking at purchasing new footwear I can use with an AFO due to foot drop. I came across the new Sketchers Slip Ins which look very comfortable and ideal for me as I have left side paralysis as a result of my stroke in 2017. They look great for anyone with mobility issues.

Has anyone here tried them, wondering if they are as good as they look.

I wear sketchers with my AFO but not the slip in ones. I might have to look into those too.

I
Have foot drop and am waiting and hoping for a. New othotic. That’s nothing to do really with you post but when I was in hospital on the stroke wars a woman opposite me had real foot and leg problems and because she thought she was doing the right thing she send her daughter out to buy trainers . She got a pair on slip on Skechers but the physio told her they would be no good because they had no laces they woulldn’t be an ale to be tight enough. I also had a chiropodist who said the same thing. They couldn’t give the support that feet need. I suggest that you ask a foot professional, preferably a stroke specialist before you invest.

I wore an AFO for a while after my stroke. I wore athletic shoes, the type where you could take the insole out, thus making more room for the AFO. Jeanne

Sketchers are so comfy and light and shock absorbing, you hardly feel you’ve got them on. I now have several pairs   I also have a pair that are slip on from before my stroke and, apart from anything else, I think you would struggle to it on over your AFO. Lace up Sketchers are definitely the way to go.

Hi Sue,
I’ve got foot drop and also can’t use my right hand, so can’t buy ordinary lace-up’s. I have a few pairs of Skechers, which have stretchy laces and they are very comfortable with my AFO. Most Skechers have a removable insole, which is useful, but I’ve noticed they vary in width, so you need to try before you buy. I know the orthotists recommend something more rigid, but haven’t found any problem so far. As far as I’m concerned, as long as they stay on my foot securely, then I’m happy. I also bought some stretchy trainer-type shoes from Shein, which are very comfortable.

My affected foot swelled so much I could not get my normal shoes on. I found an old pair of trainers and had to cut them down the side of the tongue part to allow my foot in
since then I have been to a local shoe store and they suggested Diabetic shoes that have Velcro everywhere so that if needed I can open the shoe up flat before fastening all the Velcro straps; Here is a picture of it.

Sorry to read that your foot was so swollen. Mine is too but not as bad as yours. Doctor seems unconcerned but I am! Waiting for a new orthotic hopefully but that won’t help the swelling. Have you been told what causes it?
