Hello gang. I booked a holiday to Italy the week before my stroke. I’m in the UK so it’s not that far. I’m still planning to go and maybe stay a week instead of two weeks. Main concerns are what if something happens ? Also hoping my fatigue will be better by then ? Mind you I’ve just been exhausted by peeling potatoes How do you all manage this anxiety about travelling . I’ll be 8 months post stroke when I travel.
I was in a similar position to you when I had my stroke. We had booked a holiday to Majorca and wasn’t sure whether we should go or not. But we did go and was glad that we did. This was 5 months post stroke.
To help with fatigue we booked airport assistance. Even if you can walk ok if you have assistance you don’t have to join the normal queues at security etc which helps with fatigue levels.
Whilst away we made sure we had some complete rest days. So if we did a trip one day we rested day after etc. I also rested loads when got back home.
There’s alqays a chance something might happen when you’re on holiday. That’s no different to anyone else though. Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance with full cover for your stroke. If you already had insurance in place for this trip ypu might need to let them know about your stroke.
On the flight keep your feet and legs moving. Get up and down a bit if you can.
Above all else go and enjoy yourself. It’ll do you good.
I am almost 2 years post stroke, and I had the stroke while on a cruise in the Canary Islands so I then had anxiety issues about travel. I started gradually by going away for weekends locally, then a bit further in the UK, then went on a British Isles cruise in September last year. Now we have another cruise booked in February going overseas. I suffer from fatigue but when on holiday (particularly the cruise) I paced myself. No late nights, and making sure I had time to relax. I didn’t plan much but did the activities that were important to me. I made sure I told my insurance company everything about my medical history so I was confident that if something happened I was fully covered. I found that with that preparation I wasn’t anxious about being ill on holiday and coped well with the fatigue. I’m sure with planning you will have a brilliant time and the holiday will do you the world of good and give you confidence to travel again.
I was unable to go on holiday after my stroke, but I went twice to the seaside in my first year. In my 2nd year I went to Venice and Kos, with assistance. They both had their difficult moments, but Kos did the world of good to my recovery. So much so, that this year I am returning for a holiday of twice the duration.
I would definitely urge you to go, no matter the doubts and uncertainties. For starters, we must make an effort to get out of our comfort zone, post stroke. It’s a good thing provided we can do it safely ; and you will have people looking after you ; GO !!
Thanks so much. Been talking about it all day. We have decided to go for the two weeks we originally planned for, I stead of cutting it down to one week , as it would cost so much and could be so much hassle to change the flights. I’m going to spend the next few months trying to look forward to it and plan lots of relaxation into it.
Hi @Seddso your worries and concerns are completely normal, I know my biggest concern was falling ill whilst abroad. As others have said take out a comprehensive insurance policy. We always use a comparison website and you can tailor it to meet your needs at a price to suit your pocket.
Try to relax and enjoy your days in the sun.
We have travelled abroad several times since my stroke and I now wonder why I was so anxious the first time.
Try not to worry too much and have a great time and a well earned break in the .
